Grise De St Jean

What a difference a year makes!

Last year I rooted this little guy, it only grew about 8" and the leafs were heavily infected with FMV

The leafs are looking better this year and as you might be able to see it is growing pretty good.

I have swore off of ever growing a fig in pots, but I might have to with this one because of it not liking the cold very much.

Is anyone growing this one in-ground?

At first impression this does not look like a St Jean judging by the leaf shape, can you get pics of the mother tree?

Hi Ficus

I don't think I can get mother tree photos!

Thanks.........can you post pix of the leaf?

I can't tell from your photo about the leafs.......I see your tree is in-ground but then you live in "Fig Paradise"

{Edit}Now I see the beautiful photo of the leaf......Thanks for posting.

Where is fig paradise located?

noss

Noss,

That would be in most but not all of Calif.

Noss,

.......the southern part of Louisiana where you and I live is fig heaven at times too!!  We have a long fig growing season ( June thru November) and a mediterranean type climate in the fall whenever there are no tropical storms or hurricane in the area.  We can ripen to perfection some of those late season figs. One day you will get to savor a "third crop" LSU Purple or Improved Celeste fig from your own tree and really appreciate our little bit of fig paradise which occurs whenever the rains leave us alone........

Good answer Dan

I will add, some call Ca. fig paradise....But not everyone!

Cecil,

Funny thing is that most people living in my area do not know what a great climate we have for growing figs and all of the varieties that will grow well in our area.  I'm doing my part to let them know otherwise. VdB is now the favorite fig of my Dentist for its great taste and its long season. Even his old dad loves it and propagated his own tree. Gotta luv it!!

Dan,

Yes VdB is a great fig here too, I killed my in-ground VdB with the use of Roundup but luckily I have a nice airlayer from the mother tree.

I HATE roundup.

I hate grass even more.....since it can hide those fig leaf eating June bugs. When I use round up.....I use a plywood shield to keep it off my tree trunk. Most of my fig accidents are with the riding mower. A couple of years ago I shredded my VdB by backing right over it. There were single node cuttings all over the ground!!

HAHAHA

Pruning with a riding lawnmower......I remember sandsquid saying he had did that a pretty good while ago.

I sure as heck have too.
