Grocery Store Find. Can you ID?

Hi!  I've been a little MIA recently due to preocuppation with listing hundereds of items from my late mother in law's estate on Ebay.  What a pain that is!  Anyway, we have to eat, so I found these figs today.  They are huge and of a dark variety.  They say California Figs.  Very fresh.

They taste not too sweet, and the flavor is figgy.  Seeds are small.  I think they weren't ripe enough when picked, but tonight they go on the grill and get served on salad greens with goat cheese and balsalmic vinegar.

May be Black Mission

I'm no Herman but they look like Black Mission on the outside and Brown Turkeys on the inside.
Maybe they are Black Turkeys or...Brown Missions or possibly Mission Turkeys?

Final answer: Black Mission.

Not sure which varieties are sold commercially, and I know Kadota is one, but that isn't black, right?  Maybe it is Mission!  Or that Black/Turkey blend, but doesn't that get ripe around Thanksgiving?

The store these came from is called Fresh & Easy Market, and it's only located in South Western States.  Very small targeted markets with really unusual produce.  Like today, I also got a bunch of white asparagus (hard to find, and the Fourth of July Corn on the Cob in husks with silk showing 4 for a buck.

I love that store because if it's expiring today, it goes on 50% off!  I got my figs cheap!!

I hope you all have a Happy Independence Day!

I wouldn't be surprised if they are raised in green house conditions. I actually believe the fig market will explode in the next few years ALA the Pomegranate years back.

DEEP PURPLE... I say "mission", if it were Turkey, I think the color would be light green with a shade of purple and brown.

LOOKS YUM

These are, or look very similar to the figs that flood all the supermarkets here, in NYC, and surrounding areas.  Before I grew my own figs, this was the only "black" fig that I ever tasted, except for the figs that neighbors would give me.  There are the "white" twins to these figs, but I have no idea what variety they may be.  They are always sold as "black" or "white" figs int the stores.

They are good, but my figs are better.

My guess would be Mission . Most store bought figs are not fully ripe ,which would explain why they are not so sweet. They also could be breba which are not as tasty as main crop. Anyhow I'm shure you will enjoy them being they are better than no figs.......    Angelo   Zone 7a NY

Angelo,

YESS!  Any fig is better than no fig!

And I am sure they weren't fully ripe when picked, but grilling them will bring out the sweet, and hitting them with 18 year old balsamic will enhance.

I am definitely going to take the two ripest ones, let them ferment, drop their seeds, and do a little seed planting just to defy Herman:-))  A bit of a rebel here!

I might just get a new breed!  Who knows?  I bought 2 boxes of these beauties for 2.25 each.

Appears to be mission and also appears to be a breba fig as it has that classic shape of one on the inside and also some days from being ripe .

Here is my mission breba on tree then picked when it was ripe and cut open.

I think you nailed it Martin!  TY!  Now I am more than ever determined to defy Herman2... who is Herman1?  Because he thinks you can't grow a true seed, but what he misses is you CAN grow an amazing new breed!

Saving the two ripest back for seed sowing.  The rest go on the BBQ, drenched in olive oil, grilled, then laced with 18 year old balsamic!

The seed thing is the most exciting, though!  I got time!  Thankful for that!

My vote is for Black Mission, and picked way too early (unripe).

Mission

I agree with Jason

Black Mission, not ripe. There are some plantings in the So Cal desert that are trying to push the timing of the season and also the length of the season. Website listed on the label was inop.

Let's assume these figs are Mission breba....if properly ripened, would they be delicious, and tasty?  I've never had one, so I was wondering.  The ripe figs in Martin's pictures look great.

Frank

You guys are right they are unripe Breba Mission.
Of course they do not taste their best.
That is why people ,me included do not like store bought figs.
They harvest them when the fruit change color.
Big Mistake ,but nobody listen any way.
That is why children do not care for figs in this country.
I do not blame them.
Properly Ripe Breba Mission figs taste very good.
Of course if I had the power I would make fig paste out of Breba figs and sell on the fresh market ,the Main crop, even tho they are smaller in size.
But this would be totally contrary to nowadays procedure!.
Yet I insist I am right!
