Growing fig trees in Vancouver BC Canada

Hello,

I am a new member with strong interest in growing fig trees in Vancouver BC Canada.  Can someone please let me know the suitable types of fig trees growing in this area when the winter might be as cold as -12 C with snow and lots of rain? Any winter protection needed? How? Growing in pots or growing in ground better?

Much appreciated if any member  living in Vancouver and sharing the experience would help. Thanks.

Welcome to this forum. Lots of good info, thanks to Jon and many others to make fig growing as ABC's as possible.

Amigo, the best variant is DESERT KING. Followed by Osborne Prolific - productive. Next would be LATARRULA, though not as productive & tasty as DK. All 3 variants are hardy after year 3 but can be grown in-ground with good winter protection when young. Stay away from others unless you have greenhouse. It seems Ronde de Bordeaux is working. It is under trials. With a greenhouse, you should be able to grow most variants. Others under trials are Dauphine/Granthams Royal. If you have GH -- some good variants to have would be Hardy Chicago, Marseillies VS, Gino, Negronne, LSU Hollier, LSU Golden Celeste. These are small/medium size figs. Small figs generally gives better flavor. All the said variants are productive. Big figs are generally juicier. We prefer flavor.

Desert King will give you hundreds of figs with proper pruning by year 5. Good practice to start the "pinching" treatment when tree is young. There are lots of info in this site regarding pinching.

Great! Many thanks to the valued and helpful members. No doubt, all my fig cuttings have died for putting them outside in less than 3 years without winter protection. But, I still have 2{ 1year old}, probably Desert King orLaturrula. One grown in =ground and the other in a large pot. I hope, they'll survive. The lession I learned is to have winter protection. Next winter, I'll do winter protection certainly.

Thanks again for the information.
