Growing figs in pots

I have heard that growing figs near the infrastructure. Did anyone try to grow them in nursery pots? Would they fruit in these pots? If so, how big of a pot? Would they break the pot and root on the ground anyways? Thank you!

Many, many people on the forum do this for various reasons. They tend to stay a little contained and often fruit better.

Pot size varies with the person, but often it's a as big as can be handled (15-20 gallon).

I doubt they'd break the pot and root unless left in place for season without any movement.

Thanks Kelby, would they fruit in a 15-20 gal container? If so, would they still grow tall and branch out?

Welcome Mike. Where are you located?

As Kelby said lots of people grow them in pots. I have about 75 in 5-20 gal pots. They fruit pretty good actually. You can also
bury the bottom 6-8 inches of the pot in the ground and the roots will exit the pot into the ground. That is, if the pot has holes
in it. Be sure to get pots that have the holes on the bottom side of the pot so you can cut the roots with a shovel if you do this.

Your figs can most certainly bear fruit in a 15-20 gallon container and have decent production.

Thanks all! Can someone also shine in on propagating cuttings? Do you need rooting hormones?

You need to use the search box in the upper right hand corner. There is a ton of knowledge here for you if you take some time and look for it.

Welcome to the forum, we are happy to share our knowledge and answer questions but you should know you are asking basic questions which you can easily find the answers to.

You can also try the 4th thread from the top called "Start Here, FAQ".

Bill knows how to grow potted figs - check his method here

bill's method is good, but you don't need to get too complicated. good ole nursery pot will work. #3 nursery pot is good enough to trial a variety to see if you want to keep the tree.

i max out at 10 gal storage tub. depends on the variety, you can get up to 80 or more fig off a tree in 10 gal tub.

I've gone to cutting a 50 gallon barrel in half and using that on the ones I'm keeping.

This thread  http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/How-to-search-the-forum-using-2-or-3letter-terms-5972738  gives some very good refinements on searching. I usually run out of patience with searching long before I run out of information that the search is turning up.

I've started converting my 16" diameter self watering posts to half 55g food grade barrels.  I'm making the half barrels self watering too.  The prep work is time consuming but once the trees are in, I dont' have to root prune for 3 years.  I like that a lot.

price of the container is one of the most expensive part of container culture. 1 and 3 gal containers are pretty cheap. but once it goes over 10 gal, it's almost $1 per gallon. due to limited space i max out at 10 gal tub or #15 nursery pot. really need to look more into cheaper and long lasting solutions. 10 gal tub i use are starting to crack.
