Hi all, any one growing figs in zone 6b and do you need winter protection?

I have a few that I cover every year here in se Mich.First I tie up all the branches with a thin cable then I sprinkle mice pellets around the trunk then I wrap my tree with burlap then wrap carpet around the burlap and last I use a 14 by 14 white tarp tie it real good and put soil at the bottom of the tarp works great no die back and make sure you DO NOTTTT use any plastic.Goodluck.By the way use white tarps cause they reflect the sun other tarps collect lots of moisture and rot the branches so does plastic.

I am still new at this, but much the same thing in north central Ohio. I used a couple light  fleece blankets, though, without the burlap. The final wrap was a light and blue plastic tarp. Some tips didn't make it, but otherwise in good shape. the winter was so mild though, that it is not for me a good indication that I am doing things right. Nevertheless, from others on the forum and what I have read elsewhere, it is within the standard parameters. I think rob0520 has the better idea.

Is you tarp the standard nylon type, or a cloth type?
I wasn't clear because of the "Do Not USE Plastic" comment.

I was in 6b here in Maryland but recently changed to 7a.  Quite a few people here have established fig trees without protection that seem to usually survive the winters fairly well.  This was my first winter with a young fig tree in the ground.  I used mothballs in a small glass jar with holes in the lid at the base of the tree.  I then wrapped with a few layers of carpet followed by a white plastic tarp.  Everything was held together with nylon rope.  I left the tarp open at the top to allow moisture to escape and put a bucket over the top to keep the rain out.  It seemed to work well but, as noted above, the winter was so mild that it was not a good test case.  In a year or two I may try foregoing protection altogether.
