Growing figs near eucalyptus trees

Hi,

Does anyone have experience of growing figs near eucalyptus trees ? I'm planning to grow container figs within 20 feet of 80 ft eucalyptus. Other than the debris (golf ball netting is my current solution) is anyone aware of any impact to the trees or fruit ?

Thanks !

Gioia...  possibly, lack of sun. Too much shade ? fredfig/7b

What sort of root system does a eucalyptus have? Nothing can grow well under big maples, beeches, and oaks because they have a shallow fibrous root system. I would dig the hole where you want it and see how many roots you hit, because every one you do will branch and invade the nice loose earth you have made by planting the fig tree. If eucalyptus has a deep taproot then it should not be a problem.

Eucs can be a challenge to grow things under, especially if yours are the large bluegums that drop lots of litter.  It can be more than a water issue, or even shade. Some eucs in dry areas are reported to emit chemicals that retard the growth of other plants around them (allelopathy).

You probably will have better luck in your containers.  :)

I'm with fredfig. From what I'm told full sun is best. Does this tree cover the whole area? And what does it drop? Leaves or does it drop heavy branches? If it drops seeds you could cover the soil on the containers so the seeds could not get in. If the root system on this tree is a problem, just make sure you don't let the fig trees roots grow out of the pot. Does a Eucalyptus tree put out some type of chemical, that will slow growth? I'm not sure if this helps or not, but one thing that's great here is someone will have the right answer.

careful of falling koala bears!

My neighbor has a couple of tall eucalyptus trees.  They are probably about 60 or 80 feet south of my trees and don't affect them.  I'm not sure what being closer would do, besides the shade problem.  The neighbor has plenty of other trees growing close to the eucalyptus trees.
