growing in cups

I have been rooting some different varieties of figs and I am very new at this but am pleased with what results I have got so far. I have moved about 24 trees from bags to cups some with really good root development and some with small root development. I have one cup where the roots are growing through the side hole of the cup and while I can see a little bit of roots around the cup, I feel like its too soon to remove because its only been in the cup for a week. Below is a picture. Will this fix itself or do I need to do something about it?

That is very common.  Let it be, and eventually it will dry out.  Meanwhile, other roots are forming, making up for the loss of this one.  If you attempt to disturb the mix at this point, it will likely end up with a lot of root damage.
Here is about the time I transfer out of the clear cup.  I had at least 2 long root shoots do just like yours is doing.  If you look at the bottom left of the 1st pic, you will see a dried up root from awhile back.  No ill affects after it dried up.

Tnfiggrower,i like the root sticking out...good job! I had one where the roots just stuck out over the edge of the cup instead of growing down. I added some soil on top and roots were popping out the next day....so i just planted the thing! Its growing very, very well in a one gallon pot right now. :-)

Frank, those are crazy roots!

Thanks guys. I had a feeling I needed to leave it alone but I just wasn't for sure.

Here is an updated pic of this fig.

Looking good and healthy, congratulations.

Nice...

Awesome!  I have some serious root envy!

When I was propagating using cups, I only had a few that came close to the thickness and quantity of roots that you have with yours.  I would call them very strong and health examples.  I am very new to this also and I've read all I can to see how different methods work.  The reason mine never got much more dense was because I transferred them into pots as soon as I felt the roots were being constrained.  Now I'll be the first to tell everyone that what I do is no endorsement of what to do.  I'm feeling my way through this process also.  I have even went to the extreme of transferring directly into 5 gallon pots in some circumstances.  I'm using 1, 3 and 5 gallon pots right out of the cups depending on the variety and vigor of the rooted cutting.  I'm trying to see for myself how fast similar varieties grow side by side in the different sized pots.  I heard that growth can increase 50% to 100% in larger pots rather than potting up as needed.  The issues with going to such large pots right from the start is the cost, space requirements, amount of potting medium required and (arrgh!) weight.  I add this post just as a bit of information on another way of thinking of the various methods used and tried.  I hope to add to this at the end of the season to see just what kind of difference pot size really makes.

Again, those are some really great rooted cuttings.  Happy rooting and growing everyone.

Awesome! TNFIGGROWER and FiggyFrank seem to be using slightly different growing mediums. Do you mind telling us what you used in your cups? Also, when you up pot do you use the same planting medium or switched to something different? I am very new to figs and just now have a few varieties I am trying to get started in bags. Thanks!
