Growing Indoors

Is it possible to grow figs indoors with a grow room or grow light? I have seen some pictures on here of figs being started that way but what about when they are grown? I would like to start growing figs in pots because of weather. If its possible I was thinking of trying some of the fig trees that are not able to grow in my area.

1000 W metal halide would be your best bet to try.  Figs need a lot of light and radiant heat to ripen properly.  The 1000W watt is the closest light that I am aware of to get close to achieving this.

Depending on your lighting situation and number of trees you are considering it can give you some ideas about supplemental light options if needed. Growing a big tree indoors will require more light and space. Figs don't have many pests, but you would still have to be vigilant with a large tree. I have received plants from warmer climates that arrived with scale or mealybugs. I caught them immediately, killed them, and have never seen either again. In warmer climates, they might be more common potential pests. So I would recommend knowing any potential pests that could thrive in your area.

Otherwise, my only concern is that fig trees aren't the most pleasant smelling plants. Leaf smell is often compared to cat spray. That is another important consideration for indoor growing.

Thanks Guys. This will give me somewhere to start. I'm not really looking to have a big tree but just big enough to get fruit on it for my family. I do have an interest in getting different varieties of figs so I have been buying cuttings off of ebay the last couple of weeks. I was just thinking of using a light for the figs that are not rated for my area once I get to that stage.
