These 2 cultivars are the only 2 in my entire experience growing about 150 cultivars(discarding 50),and presently observing about 100 in my fig trial, that have a totally different way of growing up.
They are true spreader,in that it will be almost impossible to grow them upright with one trunk.
They grow paralel with the ground in all directions, hugging the soil.
What is special about them?
They are very easy to protect in the winter in cold climate.
One just peg the tip down and trow anything over in top of it :soil, leaves blankets dead grass etc.
I did it with my DFIC 17 and it came out from winter without any damage ,being inground.
At this point is getting ripe, and it does make very large fruits ,of about 120 grams, with beautiful dark red interior and exterior.
The taste is also very good,no complain.
Guilbeau is close related, but not the same in my opinion.
Also what is good about DFIC 17,is that it is the most tolerant cultivar to the Fig Mosaic virus, from all UCDavis cuttings I had.
Guilbeau is mosaic free.
This is something I thought north easterner need to know and use,and that is why I posted it.
