Hail Disaster

Had a bad day today, hail messed up all my figs trees, wondering what I could do to nurse them back up. The bark got damaged on some of them, can I put something on the bark so it helps it heal?. Some got broken, can I root the broken pieces?.

Happened to me last fall.  When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.  Take the knocked off branches and make more trees.

Glad to know you're safe!  Some not so lucky.  I remember living in Arlington and Mansfield in the late 80s... One afternoon, a tornado was chasing our schoolbus.  Will never forget that - thank goodnes the bus driver had a good head on their shoulders!

ya, it went right through my area, it didn't touch down though, it picked up 18 wheeler's and blew them around.  What sucks is I took pictures of my yard and tree's yesterday to document their progress and this happens today. I got 6 different fig plants (VDB, LSU Black, LSU Purple, O'Rourke, Peter's Honey and Petitie Negri) 3 weeks back and setup sub irrigation and was all excited for this year. sucks.

Yes it's one chunk, all the white stuff that's in below picture are chunks of that size, 90% of them are base ball size.

bark got stripped of on my VDB, can I do something to make it heal?.

You can try to put it back in place as carefully as possible before it dries out, then wrap it with something such as that stretchy green garden tape (even cut plastic strips), and hope the living cells will bond together again in the same manner that that grafts fuse living tissues together.

When I was a kid I fixed a few small woody branches on a tree by doing that.

I'm sorry you have suffered so much damage. Even though your trees have been damaged, they look as if they will make it.

rchukka....

In the late summer of 2011, a violent hail-storm came through my area, and shredded almost all the leaves off my trees and damaged many of the near-ripe figs.  My mouth dropped open, and I swear, tears filled my eyes when I looked  at all the ruin!

Your trees will recover, and they'll grow new leaves, and branches to replace those that were damaged or lost.  It's only the beginning of the growing season, so they will bounce back in no time at all.  The bark damage is another story.  Keep your fingers crossed, and hope the bark heals over.

Good luck.

Frank

rchucca,

Sorry about the damage to your trees. Right now things may look bad but by this time next year it will be as if nothing happened.

I had the same problem last year around this time. My larger Celeste got hit hard. Surprisingly I got a very good crop of fruit subsequent to the damage. The figs were dinged but the insides were fine. I even thought the fruit appeared bigger than usual.  The bark did get damaged but healed without any intervention. On the smaller plants like the ones in your picture - they took a while to bounce back but today I do not see any evidence of that damage.

Hang in there and I am certain they will be just fine!

Unfortunate, but at least you are okay!
My sister lives in Dallas and her husband had to shelter in a stairwell for quite some time. Their cars also got dented by the hail, but the important thing is everyone is okay!
Best of luck with the rest of the season.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

potted the broken limbs and tapped up the bark.

If I were you, I would just stick them in pots and leave them outside, if it is humid enough.  You could even try sticking them directly in the ground.  Some will probably say they should spend their first winter in a pot in a garage, though.  They will probably drop their leaves, but I don't see any advantage in pulling them off.  If you were going to try to root them in a plastic bag or a box with sphagnum, or something like that, it might make it easier to pull the leaves off.

quick update, trees are doing good so far, VDB seem to be top heavy, is there anyway to make it branch at the bottom?.

Pinch the growth tips, and it will make more branches for you!  Like more than you want!
Suzi

That was some big hail stones you had there.

Small update, the trees have recovered better than expected...
