Half ripe Celeste?

Not sure this is really Celeste.  My LSU Purple from Ison's nursery was recently confirmed to be an unknown.  This is the other tree I bought from Ison's about 16 months ago.

Last year, this "Celeste" produced many small dime sized figs and dropped them all w/o ripening.

So far, it has been looking the same this year.  But day before yesterday, I saw this one that was starting to change color.  None had changed color last year.  Yesterday, I looked again and it was a medium dark purple and soft on one side and shriveled green on the other.  Literally half ripe, right down the middle!

I picked it and cut it down the "ripe" meridian.  The ripe half was decent, but a little bland.  The unripe side had no juice at all.

There's a few more starting to turn dark now that look better.  They are a little bit bigger.. nearly Quarter sized.

But I didn't think Celeste were such a dark purple.  I thought maybe they mixed up the LSU Purple and Celeste, but this doesn't look like LSU Purple either.. and the other one doesn't look like Celeste either.

Looks like I might have 2 unknowns from Ison's.  Very dissappointing.

I ordered my LSU Purple from Isons as well but that was spring of 2013. From what I can tell, you can see the pics of the fruit in my very recent post, it sure looks like LSU Purple. I've read in another blog some where that there are 3 strains of this variety in circulation. One of them has a open eye as well. There was a recent post on Celeste from around the country and all seemed to vary alittle depending on where it was grown. I wonder how many variants of Celeste there actually are?

Here's more pictures of my Celeste. Does this look like a Celeste, or is this another mislabeled tree?

Almost ripe...

This one was hanging low and fell off as soon as I touched it.

Another one that came loose the next day.

Taste.. slightly figgy, not sweet at all.  Thin outer skin, but thick walled (not sure what that part is called). The pulp was moist, but not juicy.

It's in a big 20gal rope handle tub from Lowes since I got it in Mar 2013.  I've been watering it good everyday, but I'm wondering if the water is getting into the root ball, or just draining around the sides.

I had mulch on top last year and removed the mulch a couple of months ago and found that the potting mix had shrunk away from the wall.  I added more potting mix/compost around and on top.   The leaves look realy good.  It put out lots of fruit, but a good 30% of them have dried up and fallen off before ripening.

Should I use a watering spike, to get some water into the center of the rootball?  or should i pour some mildly soapy water to lessen the surface tension?

I'm working on adding a drip system, so it can get more water a few times a day. Currently I water only in the morning.

This is my celeste which was bought as a Lsu purple,  it was mislabeled but since I didn't have a celeste at the time it wasn't too disappointing.

Yours looks similar to mines but a little smaller. My tree doesn't drop very many figs at all like celeste are known for. I've heard there are a lot of different strains of celeste but I can't say for sure that's what you have.

It definitely looks like it on the outside.  There's a couple more ripening that are larger than pictured above.  In a few days, they should be ready.  So far, this is the only tree that has started ripening for me.

James, not positive, but leaning toward yes.

half ripe "something" LOL
this was the breba from one of my Glendale figs... was super sweet.

Any idea what this could be guys?

Looks like they can come in all shapes and sizes, always something new, how great this is.

James,
IMO, your fig looks to be a Celeste, but Ryan's looks to be a Southern Brown Turkey. The Celeste seems to be the correct size and shape. Ryan's fig doesn't have anything for size comparison, but it looks larger than a regular Celeste with a different interior color similar to the Southern Brown Turkey.

to be honest, it doesn't look too appetizing. This is disappointing to hear from Isons. They are top notch on berries but perhaps they are overreaching to sell figs.

This definitely looks like a Celeste to me.

Here's a couple more picked this morning.  The bigger one wasn't quite ripe..  these are not as good as the ones from the mature tree in my other thread.
