They change diapers, drive us to school, basketball practice, cheer-leading meetings...they give us rides on their shoulders, buy us our first cars, snake toilets, help us with homework, teach us about guns, how to throw a football, and sit through endless dance recitals....we sit on their laps, they watch cartoons with us, and lay on the floor so we can jump on them. They give us strength, teach us to "suck it up".... They teach us that "life" has its ups and downs, and that we will not always get what we think we want. They teach us when to be strong, and when to be gentle.
I miss my dad. Wish he was still here. He did a million things for my mom, my sister and I, and we thought it would never end. We took him for granted. He was a NYC Fireman for thirty years, fought in WWII, was never rich, and gave up everything to raise a family, and to help others. He never once complained about anything. He was always a gentlemen...the old fashioned kind of gentleman... and never showed disrespect to anyone. He taught us by example, by showing, not by empty words.
Thank your dads, and all fathers, father-substitutes, uncles, friends, etc...and do it everyday. They are the silent, and forgotten heroes.
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY !
Frank
