Hardy Chicago in MD Still Ripening

Mornig All

Last days of Summer/early Fall here in Maryland and my HC is attempting to ripen up a lot of the remaining figs that are still present. The once nice deep green leaves have been frosted a few times, most have now fallen.

I have a few fig trees on our patio, under an umbrella, but most have now been moved to my old storage/ sun room.

Here's a pix of a few figs that are on the HC as they look today. The taste and flavor not quite what it was during hot days of summer.

I got my first Hardy Chicago today. It was berry good.

Yes they can,all Mount Etna related strains will ripe ,even without leaves, and some of them will dry to a very tasty dry fruit, trough December ,if a lot of Sunny days.
They hold on branch tight and will not fall, out unless taken off by people.

I'm in Columbia, MD.  Have you been moving them in and out of a shed when the temp drops to freezing?  Tonight (Sunday night) is supposed to drop to freezing too.  Mine are going in the shed for the night.

TAS

Have not been moving any around really, however THIS one is an in-ground one that I have next to our house facing south/south east. It's about 15 feet tall at this stage with many large branches and limbs. I'll be giving it a nice prune later after we get a few more frosts and extend cold weather.

Very nice!!! My HC in ground too trying to ripen but he is ripening slowly mine is half your size in ground maybe is the reason then. Please post if you get a nice large crop when it comes--lets see who goes the latest!! I also am having the nice November fig harvest here in Virginia :). I too notice some impact on fruit quality without heat to ripen outside but figs are still very good here.

Here in Southern Ohio the leaves started dropping off of my Chicago last week. My last figs came off 9/22 and they were good but not as good as the first ones.

Yeah,

My CH's are still ripening (tree in ground), but do not taste as good as the earlier ones, either.  Herman is right, though, they have a sweet, dry quality to them.  I just prefer a little more water content (not much more) to allow more of the flavor to be enjoyed.
