Here is a video review of Hardy Chicago. If people find this helpful I will post some more video reviews of other trees.
Nicely done video.
Very good and informative video! And also a nice explanation of the shown variety. I would love to see more Joe!
I enjoyed the video. Your trees look great. Can you explain what you use to bag the fruit? I am looking forward to growing a Hardy Chicago, hopefully by next year.Christine
Thanks for the feedback. Those bags are called ORGANZA BAGS. They sell them at craft stores and party stores. Around here I can get them for $9.99 for a 50 pack. They are the best way to protect figs that I have tried so far.
I googled organza bags. I see that they come in a few different sizes. What a clever idea. I'll look for them at my local craft store.Christine
I love the video and would love to see more videos of your trees. I'm in the same climate, so it is particularly interesting to me.Are you on a flood irrigated lot ? I noticed the lawn. You don't see many lawns here because of the water cost.
How does the hardy chicago fair with wet areas? i get similar heat in the summer but being in florida we get alot of wet weather too
the vid is fun. please post more, especially of those that do well here.
bada_bing,The trees are on drip irrigation. The bermuda grass growing around the trees is growing from the drip. I let everything in my backyard just grow wild this summer. I haven't trimmed the lawn since April. The fig trees seem to like the extra shade around their roots. The backyard has gotten surprisingly green since I decided to just leave it alone.Andrew,I think that Hardy Chicago would do well in your climate. Maybe someone in a similar climate to you can say how it has done for them.Susie,I will be posting some more.
Good videos. Good to see other growers in my area. My lawn is also very green and I haven't watered it in about a year.
Frozen in Arizona:How well did your 'Joe's Jersery' stack up against the real, 'Hardy Chicago'? Growth, yield, ripening time, taste, etc? Just wondering...Frank
Hey Frank, The Joe's Jersey tree has been superior to Hardy Chicago again this growing season. I will post a video review of the Joe's Jersey tree. JJ started fruiting earlier. It grows more aggressively and produces a lot more fruit. The fruit tastes the same as HC, though in my opinion HC tends to be a little sweeter. The fruit on both trees is in the small to medium size range. However the HC figs tend to be a little bit larger on average. I'm still not sure if JJ is a unique cultivar or just a good strain of HC. However if I had a choice between the two I would definitely choose JJ. It is my workhorse fig. Very prolific all summer and fall here in AZ.
Still waiting for my little Hardy Chicago to ripen figs up here to the north of you Joe. Looking forward to comparing with Joe's Jersey. Hard to beat a great tasting fig that produces over a period of several months.
Dave,I think you will like HC a lot. It is very similar to the Joe's Jersey tree. Let me know how they compare in your yard.
