Hardy in Zone 7B

I live in zone 7B. I would like to plant the following fig trees in my yard.  I am wondering if anyone has any experience with the winter hardness of any or all of these fig trees.  These fig trees will not be planted near the house.

Beall
Col de Dame
Desert King
Hunt
Italian Honey
Nero Banssotte
Petite Negri
Smith
Vernino
Violet de Bordeaux

In British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada -- Desert King & Italian Honey(Lattarulla) have no problems being grown outside. Not sure about Negronne, lots of them avaialble in garden centers. We get artic outflow with wind chill down to -20*C or -4*F for up to ususally a week each time it comes down. Usually per winter we have 2 to 3 times of artic outflow winds. This year I think we only had one. Most times it is -3*C or about 26*F in Jan. and Feb.

Coll de Dama (it is a Catalan variety, this is its real name) is an excellent variety, in my opinion one of the tastiest, but it is a very late ripening variety.

I live in the North of Spain, in zone 9, and according to my readings in forums from people who grow it here, it doesn't ripen every year. However, sometimes the weather is mild and dry in autumn and they crop excellent late figs.

I haven't adult plants of Coll de Dama but I have gotten some cuttings this year which are easily rooting.

Vern,

Way back when, (early 1990's) I ordered a Petite Negri.  Seems like I must have just had it in a pot.  I knew nothing, absolutely nothing about fig tree growing.  Job change meant moving out of state.  The little fig tree and some precious flowers moved to town to my Mother's home in SW Missouri, zone 6a.  It grew like crazy, planted against the South foundation under a wide overhang of the house.  But the fruit never got ripe - at least if it did, we didn't know it.  :-)

One time when we went back for a visit, it was gone.  Mother had chopped it out, she hated it.  No fruit, taking over her flower bed, it was a nuisance.   :-(  Of course, I didn't even know I could have saved a cutting or two for future use.

So, judging by how it grew in a location three zones cooler, your Petite Negri should do okay in zone 7b and maybe you will even get ripe fruit!  lol

Elizabeth, zone 5b

Thanks for the information Paully, Axier, and Elizabeth.  I planted in the grown all on the list except Col De Dame, Vernino, and Violet de Bordeaux.  I would still like more information on how cold hardy Col De Dame would be if I planted it in the grown.  If I remember correctly Herman had a Col De Dame.  His climate is just a little colder than mine.  Herman do you have your Col De dame in the grown?  If so do you protect it during the winter?

Vern

I have it in the ground and protected it every year, but it dies, almost to ground despite care.
I would sugest keep this one in CONTAINER.

Thanks for the information Herman

Paully22 and Elizabeth:

Thanks for putting up that information.  I get the same cold air Paully mentions, once in eleven years down to -10f, most years not so cold as -4.  This year we never dropped below +10f.

Desert King will be of no use to me in OK but Lattarula and Petit Negri are definite prospects.  I've come to the conclusion that one can manage only so many pots.
