Harvey's fig harvests in September 2014

Starting a new thread.  See links for July and August threads... (I'm still picking most of these)

Today, I picked my first Unknown Dark Greek.  Not acquired from Marius but I believe it was first "discovered" by him, thus pointing this out to help distinguish from any similar unknowns.  My tree is relatively young and just planted in the ground a couple of months ago.  I picked four fruits today that I had not previously noticed.  The first two were enjoyed with a friend who was visiting (Gary, you missed your ride opportunity, hope your back gets better soon!).  These two each weighed 16 grams and were very sweet and had a very nice flavor.  I didn't notice any flavors that I could associate with other fruits.  Not a high level of acidity but a nice sweet flavor.  I look forward to larger harvests of these next year.

BTW, I expect Abebereira will be next on this list....finally! :)

Very NICE Harvey.

Real nice, you have a great one, I don't have this one but I think I have the other that you mentioned. Congrats.

Small but beautiful.   Looks like they were picked exactly at the right point!

Those figs look great, Harvey, and of course the photo couldn't be nicer. Sorry I missed the chance to visit, but the back feels a little better. I would've probably tried to talk you into picking that Abebereira:-))

Gary, if your back is better, come here at 7am tomorrow and help me lay out 18,000 feet of 3" aluminum sprinkler pipe.  I'll let you have the Abebereira! :) I expect to be walking 50-80 miles in the next 5 days irrigating alfalfa.

It was a long day and I noticed a scrub jay flying from my fig orchard after getting sprinklers started in my alfalfa late today so I checked the Abebereira.  There were bird pecks in one of them and I decided not to risk it and picked the most ripe fruit.  I think it was still a day or two early (today was cooler than normal, believe we had a high if 79F), but flavor was quite good and still pretty sweet.  Looking forward to many more of these.  I think I need to defuse my flash to avoid the blown highlights/reflections.

I received a cutting of this fig simply called "Cyprus" last December.  While searching through my crowded potted trees I discovered way down low inside the shade was this one very ripe fruit.  It was probably a couple of days past prime but was very sweet with a nice flavor, though not intense.  No souring as I had feared after touching it.

Good looking figs Harvey.

I'm jealous that you're eating Abebereira figs! I was really looking forward to that cultivar this year. Unfortunately, that was the only tree to die on me this year. The Abebereira you sent me a couple months back is doing very well and putting on size quickly. If time permits i'm going to plant it in the orchard hopefully this weekend.

I need to update my fig picture thread as a lot of different varieties have ripened since my last posting. However, it seems like it's raining here every other now. Thankfully I had perfect fig weather for a good 4-6 weeks earlier in the season. The rain has provided one positive outcome as to weed out some of the new to me varieties that will mostly likey get sent to fig heaven.

Today I discovered some ripe figs I had missed earlier so they were a bit dried already but still tasty.  I received cuttings of this French variety from another collector a couple of winters ago and these were my first fruits although the tree has been growing quite vigorously.

Things definitely slowing down here but I still was able to pick my first De La Plata from a potted tree.  Flavor was moderately sweet and pretty good overall but should get better with age.  Tree is in a 5 gallon pot and about 3' tall.

Maybe my De La Plata is pale because it's from a small tree in a pot and shaded.  It did suffer under-watering a few times.

Great pics as usual Harvey, congrats!

nice collection Harvey, enjoy them

Nice figs Harvey !
Your Abebereira (Bêbera Preta ?) has a distinct, juicy and nice pulp color, approaching tones of orange.
This I see for the very first time in such cultivar.

Nice looking figs!

I appreciate the pictures of obscure figs, Harvey!

Okay, finally!  Picked my first Col de Dame Noir today.  Birds had got some earlier ones but seem focused on my Abebereira for now.  Flavor of this fig was great.  Nice but not overpowering level of acidity and a good amount of sweetness.

For what it's worth, I had my DNA analyzed recently and received results back last night.  It's reported that I have the gene present for the normal ability to taste bitterness.  Doesn't say anything about tasting berry flavors, etc. LOL.  I suspect some people that label some fruits as insipid might be lacking these gene.
