Havasu Fig Video Review

Thanks Joe. I've been waiting for this review.
My single remaining Havasu fig is swelling now, the tree is in my sun room and only has 3 leaves left on it so I hope ripens the fig. That also shows that the tree does recognize when it should go dormant. It has hardened all it's wood long ago and the terminal buds are tightly encased reddish brown.

Joe,
Lovely Video, I've always loved the way leaves looked on this variety, and now the taste...
Thanks for posting.

Great review Joe.  Did you happen to see my Unknown Lake Spur thread?  Leaves are very close and it is yet to be identified.  I didn't get to see any ripe figs this year but like yours it died back last year and grew back this year to around 10' tall.

Charlie, I don't think this is the same fig. I can't be completely sure, but in your thread the pictures of the unripe fig look to have a green eye. The Havasu fig has a bight pink/red eye when still green.

Thanks Calvin.

Hi Frozenjoe,
Nice fig, but such an opened eye ! First time I see one like that.
For your tree, you may want to remove one foot of growth on the 3 higher stems - you can root those 3 green cuttings by removing all except the last 2 tiny leaves and put the stems in water
for 3 weeks, and then in a pot of compost in a greenhouse - they need to grow during the winter because it is late and they are still green.
By doing that, you will force the tree to harden the rest of the stem a bit sooner, and that might help .

Thanks for the comments everyone.

joe you sure do love the word "guys" :)

Just now saw this, Joe.  Very nice review on your Havasu tree.  Especially your observations about dormancy issues in our area.  Would love to see an update now that Spring is here.

How did the tree do this winter?  Did it freeze back to the ground again?   I had two or three large branches and trunks (I grow them in a multi trunk form), die to the ground this winter, while neighboring branches and trunks on the same tree  remained viable.  Very odd.

Have you considered wrapping or covering it on those few nights when it freezes?

Hi Dave,

The tree is doing great. No damage this winter. The tree is getting big fast. There was a huge breba on it that I ate a few days ago. It was almost the size of an apple! There will be many main crop figs this year. I'll do an updated review when they start to ripen

Here is a photo of the Havasu tree from today.  It is a very strong grower.  I am expecting many figs from it this year.
