Havasu Purple

Hi all.  I'm looking for feedback from those of you who got cuttings last winter from the Havasu fig.

My trees all put on a lot of growth this past season, and produced fruit, but the fruit was delayed (perhpas in favor of all that growth), and much of it remains on the trees which are now going dormant.

If anyone thinks they can ID it, please let me know.  Also, if you got fruit this first year, and what you think of it.

The tree and fruit do have many of the brown turkey characteristics.  In my climate, which is an extended hot season, the fruit is large and quite good.   So if you think that is what it is, or if the first year fruit was not good in a your climate, let me know about that as well.  Won't hurt my feelings.  I just want to know where not to send cuttings in the future.

Thank you, in advance, for your thoughts.

Dave I killed mine in the cup stage

Hi Dave,

You gave me a couple of cuttings (thank you very much!).  I gave one away (to Bob C), and my other one died (a mishap).  I believe Bob's is still going.

As for ID, I think it is closely related to Hardy Chicago.  That's based just on photos though.  I remember discussing this somewhere or other (maybe emails?... I can't find that discussion by search).  I seem to recall you saying you don't think it is the same as HC though.  But I think it's related.  In any case, it'll be interesting to see what others who have it can say about it.

Again thanks for sending the cuttings.  Sorry I can't offer any info from direct experience.  Another member may send me a cutting again, in which case once I've grown it I'll comment again (future years).

Hey Dave,

Here is a photo of the Havasu tree I got from you earlier this year.  It is newly planted in that spot.  It was in a container until just yesterday.  It did really well this year.  It stayed healthy and put out new growth.  No fruit this year, as the plant is still very young.  I'm hoping to taste the fruit next year.

That tree looks happy, Joe.  It should go gangbusters in your climate.

Mike, it's nothing like Hardy Chicago.   Fruit is 2 to 3 times the size, and it grows much more aggressively and into a more spreading form.   You'll see what I mean next year.

If you'll click on the pic in my avatar. that tree was two and a half years old from a cutting when I took the pic.  It died to the ground last winter, but grew back even larger this year.

Dave , my havesu is still on the small side. I struggled with potting soils this year - was using MG and growth suffered. Switched to fox farms on a few and had great growth. So early spring I'll change over the bulk of them. This year was not a great growing season - weather wise -here either .

I had to poach my own pics from an older thread, this is mine on 09/24. A plucked many embryos off, next year should be good year.

Mine is pretty small to....hopefully next year my fig babies will explode in growth.

Dave do you have any cross section pictures of the fig? Is it solid?

This is from another thread  Just picked my 1st fig from Col de Dame Noire... by Vivian, looks pretty similar to mine above. Wouldn't that be neat?

Only thing is I thought all the CdD's were supposed to be pretty similar; at least fruit wise. So, I haven't really seen many pictures of of CdDN leaves. But I've seen a ton of CdDB leave pics lately and neither mine nor this one look like that. Of course I think I remember you mentioning you(Dave) have a CdDB, how do the fruit flavors and appearances beyond skin color compare/contrast? That is Havasu to CdDB.
