rob, I hope you got what you think you bought. I'm still trying to ID my Lowes fig that I bought for a LSU Gold. In fact I picked my first one today, deliciously sweet and only slightly figgy. Good luck.

Thanks Gene.Leaves look similar to a HC so we'll see.

Rob 3 week ago I bought a HC from Lowes or I thought it was. The tag is CH, so I am not sure what it is now. They were on clearance for a $1.00. How could I not pass it up. One is doing  good with little fig I think. Does it make a difference if it HC or CH?

Wow that's a steal.

Does it look like a HC to you?

Bugs your plant looks like mine.Hopefully we got a HC.

I saw them too.  Wonder who the grower is.  Loews has to be losing money on this.  Couple of things.  They label it "Chicago hardy"  I assume they mean Hardy Chicago.  And the tag says "cold hardiness -10 to -20 degrees F", zone 5.  Really?  Just hope they aren't brown turkey.  They appear to be a dark fig.

Ed

Ed, they are true to name, compared to another mail order company I ordered from, for the same HC. No HC this year at the Loew's near me, Sergio.

After reading that Gene said, it got me thinking. Maybe they are playing word games and they are some thing like a brown turkey. They had 5 or 6 figs and all the leaves look the same to me, so I pick the two best. They were in bad shape dry, wilt and in the hot 90 degree sun for a few days. That is why I send the pic, to see if they were HC or not. This is a great forum.

For under 10 bucks for a healthy plant I believe It's worth it no matter what they give me.

But it does suck when your looking forward to a dark sweet fig and the fig turns out to be yellow!

Here is good example of leaf on my Hardy Chicago. There are some 3 lobe not shown that also will come on plant.
Some figs from tree also from several years back for examples.

It can look very similar to my Sals El at times . But taste wise no.
Taste is distinctive on Hardy Chicago compared to Sals El.

Ray Givens did a video Gardening in Georgia and describes Hardy Chicago just like i taste mine .

Hey Ruben, Is that Banana?

Dominick,

I am not 100% certain since it was mislabeled, but I think it is a Dottato/ Kadota. I have a Banana and so far they look nothing alike leaf-wise.

go4broek, man that looks almost like the one I got. can you post a picture of a leaf. Tomorrow I will post a picture of the fig and leaf.

About a month ago, at our local Lowes in Wilkes-Barre, PA, I also couldn't resist...purchased a "Chicago Hardy" for about $7.

The photo below was taken on May 21, 2011.  I repotted in the soil mix that I use for all of my trees - 2 parts pine bark mulch, 1 part perlite, 1 part composted manure, some lime and osmocote sprinkled in, then buried the pot, south side of house.

The little tree is growing nicely and currently has a handful of pea-sized figs on it.

Gene,

Here you go.  By the way, the lemon-yellow fruit is the breba crop.

The leaves and fruit on my Hardy Chicago look similar to the HC that Martin has.  It is a good fig, especially to be grown in the North.  The leaves on those young "Chicago Hardy" plants from Lowes look like they could be the real HC, but I guess only time will tell as the plants mature and put out more consistent leaves and you finally get fruit.  Good luck!  But I still prefer to get my plants from a trusted source instead of playing box store roulette :)

Ruben by the description on Bass' site, it suggests black spots like the browning of a banana. That's why I asked. Still looks like a fig I would like.

Can be used for eating, canning and drying. The skin is light yellow with ripe-banana colored spots when ripe. The flesh is light amber colored. Small, productive, hardy trees

Dominick,

Here is an interesting thread on the similarities between some of the light-green figs  http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fig/msg071625105502.html?29

I remember that post Thanks.

I love the pic in the middle with 5 diff. 'Named' varieties. They all look the same exterior and interior.

I agree. Assuming the sources are reliable, I would say they are synonyms.

Grandinetti's pic of HC looks correct on the leaf to me. Most of the others look right also, including Martin's. HC usually seems to have that prominent middle finger and lobes that are wavy/jagged rather than smooth/round (sorry I forget the technical terms).

For $1 or $7 that is on hell of a deal!
