HC from Lowes

Very much looks like the HC fig varieties of the Mt. Etna region! I think for ONCE Lowes may have actually sold a variety (CORRECTLY) NAMED! Wonderful! Lowes has always been notorious for selling wrong named varieties, I can look at them at lowes and tell they are wrong with the names they have, why never will buy from them, but would have if seen this as it appears to be coreect variety! Ciao

go4broek, here are the pictures of mine.

Gene,

I'm anxious to see this particular fig on your tree. The eye and shape looks familiar to me. It "might" be the same one that I've seen at local nurseries in the area and the same one that is being propagated by a local wholesale nursery as "Improved Celeste". Yep....there is a yellow fig going around in the retail trade as an improved regular Celeste fig strain besides the new O'Rourke and "LSU" Improved Celeste hybrids. I love this stuff.........

FYI......I've recently purchased another beautiful discounted fig tree from Lowe's for $2.99. This one was propagated by a Florida wholesale nursery. It was labeled "Ischia". It had red bud tips, pink leaf stems, leaves like VDB, and no signs of any FMV. I'm betting that it is a very good fig.

Here is mid September HC from 2009 these were more slower to get ripe as season was little cooler -  interior little darker.

Gene,

Very similar indeed. What about breba vs main crop?

This year I lost all breba, but if I remember correctly the breba were bright yellow and ripened that color while the main crop ripens with some spotting on them. I think the brebas were more round that flattened. I'll have to wait until next year and see what I get.

@ Dan. I toured that whole nursery (Simpson Nurseries) in Monticello, FL earlier this year. They have quite an outfit. According to Beshears (one of the brothers, I think it was Rob) they propagate and wholesale just about every fruit that grows in the Southeast; he said they even grow some fruits that retail only in Kentucky. Also said they wholesale to Lowes and HD across the southeast. I saw those pseudo nursery pots with the pictures of the fruit all over the places and those tags just above the graft. Acres and acres of plant/tree material in different stages of growth.

Ed    I found the pot and the address was on the back. Here are some pic. The tree is doing real good, for the short time that I have had the tree.  Thank to the forum and every ones support and import. I am looking forward to eat my first,  home grown fresh fig in 3 years.

I just bought my own little fig from Lowe's, I couldn't resist it. It was labeled as 'Chicago Hardy,' and I guess I'll find out if it was labeled (almost) correctly when it gets bigger. For $4.99, I couldn't NOT get it. Felt like I was adopting a mutt from the pound!

My local Lowes store in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey has Chicago Hardy fig trees for $10.98 today.

The Lowes in Hamilton, NJ also has them...These are nice little trees for $11...
