Heat record broken today in Charlotte

It is 99 degrees outside at 5PM! We broke a 100 yo record today. The last time I can remember it being hot like this was 2009 & 2010. This morning at 5:30AM, I went out and hand watered all of my container trees. It was a good thing I did! It is smoking JOE hot outside.

I think I'll take a gardening day off today.

It's 54 here right now in Maine...me and my figs might need sweaters.  You guys stay safe.

Wow, that is really hot this early. Over here in Arkansas we are having almost perfect summer weather; upper 80s for highs, lower 70s for lows. Everything in my yard is loving it!

It is supposed to be 103 here tomorrow and super hot for the rest of the month. My garden was looking really droopy before I watered it. My AC was out this weekend at home and at work as well. Not fun.

It's getting warm here along the Gulf Coast as well, 97 today and we rarely reach the upper 90's at my location. Time for a visit to Maine, loved living there!

Well, it's suppose to reach 101 today and tomorrow.  Last night my heat pump went out and I'm working from home today waiting on the repair dude.

A couple of my trees are showing the heat stress sign....Smith and a few others but mostly Smith.  My trip to Nashville took longer than expected by one day.  When I got home that night, my big Smith tree was already showing stress signs.  I watered it that night and it perked back up and was fine.  Today, it's fully water and looking fine but some lower leaves have turned yellow and there is nothing I can do but let it go through it and hope for rain to cool things off.

You are welcome to some of our rain.   We've probably broken the record for precipitation in June by the 10th and days with over 2 hours of sun have been scarce.  It's so dark outside that many of my fig plants are looking as if they're light deprived.

Oh I know how you feel guys. Our ac out also. The thermostat showed 87 in our bedroom last night . We went to bed with all windows open and ceiling fans on full throttle. Repair dude expected this evening. Work ,same story. 9 floor renovation all glass bdng but no windows, no ac and no fans to avoid dust from flying all over. Not fun at all when you have to deal with fiberglass insulation. Watered the figs last night and woke up 1/2 an hour earlier (4:15) this morning to water them again before work.real time temp expected to touch 100' F today also. Stay cool guys.

It has been 90 degrees or more for almost 100 days here.   Killer is dew point of 73.   Means suffocating humidity.   Thankfully ac works great.  New Units two years ago.   Energy efficient   save me almost 100 each month on electric bill.    Cold drinks all around for everyone.   Joyce

Another record broken today.....99 degrees. Our old record since 1994 was 97. The service tech left a few hours ago. The dgital theromstat went out and had temps in the 90s. Replaced it and now its getting cooler.

Dennis,
Same heat story up here in Virginia. I'm struggling to move my figs up to larger containers as watering once a day is not working on about 150 of my container born figs.
The figs are otherwise loving the heat as all the plants in large containers are producing bumper crops. I did add a lot of micronutrients and food this year (bunny poop, Azomite clay and fish meal with kelp and seaweed).
Do not press yourself and be very aware of heat stroke.

My largest Smith tree is so stress right now.  It looks like someone stray painted the leaves yellow.  Smith and Galbun are 2 trees that can easily be stressed.  Since I got back from Nashville, I haven't worked on any of my trees.  It's just too hot to be outside in the heat and blistering sun.  Tonight, I will go out and do some weed control.  Believe it or not but ants was part of my problem in one of my 7 foot tall Hardy Chicago trees.  The tree was growing fine but not sucking up water.  I pulled the tree out of its pot and found large air pockets underneath with thousands of ant tunnel at the bottom.  The ants had created a large air gap from the drain hole up.  So, the pot was filling up and the water reached the drain plug and came out.  The ants had removed all the soil from the bottom just above the drain.  I'd never saw that before.  That explained why the tree was not getting water

We are also having record heat. Violette de Bordeaux and Sweet George are the varieties in my yard showing the most stress.  Have been misting some of my plants to see if some evaporational cooling during the worst of the heat will help.

Blazing hot here also   Everybody in pots under shade trees.  Irrigation sprinkler gets them twice a week.   Plus it is hurricane season and we are starting to have afternoon rains.  The sips due to high heat have to be checked often  plants in the pool lanai planter being watched carefully   due to amount of concrete surrounding them.   I hope they were not fire ants    so vicious and their bite is excruition.
