Heavy fig branch problem

On one of my favorite fig trees, there was a vigorous side branch from last year. Yeah, I should have pruned it, but I didn't. It is loaded with maturing figs. It was laying on the ground this morning from the weight. It didn't break because it is still young and pliable. I fig-st it ( see what I did right there) for the time being by raising it up and building a staked crutch. My question is what should I do with it after the season? Most of the wood is greater than 1 inch diameter, So I don't know about cuttings. The branch is about 8 ft. Any suggestions on how to salvage it for the future? Thanks, Bill

It will be ideal for cuttings once it goes dormant.  But it would be fine to lea-f it alone as well.  Just prune the tree to the shape you want it and don't worry about the branch that could.  Keep it supported in the position you want it.

That's a great opportunity you have there Bill. I broke a fat long branch off 6 months or so back and rooted a few sections and they are popping out fruit this year. Try to  air layer it off at several intervals possibly with support as Bob recommends. That'll halve its size easily and you'll get fruit next year from the large air layers. Good Luck!

Thanks, guys. I really appreciate it. I thought the diameter would be to large, but apparently not. I have only posted a few times, but everyone is so helpful. Thanks again.

I agree with the air layers. You could end up with a few extra trees next year.

yeah.. air layer it... if it's tree worth keeping.
