Hedging My Bets

Thanks Frank

It looks like you have started a second row for the hedge since I dropped off the trees on Monday. Very nice and very fast. It will be a quite an orchard as well as an excellent fig stroll along the border.

Pictures really do not capture the space you have nor the work you have done. If and when you have the time, intent, and energy, I vote for a video tour of the current state of your Fig Orchard.

I have said it before and I will say it again. I am only paying it forward and doing for others what has always been and continues to be done for me. The spirit of giving is contagious. Almost three years ago, Dan and Martin were the first members to share cuttings with me. Since then, my goal has been to pay it forward and continue to add value to this forum by making it more than just a social medium but a place to learn, educate, eat, grow, and share. They not only got me started but also gave me inspiration, motivation, as well as an education. A powerful combination. I know that you are doing the same thing.

Looks awesome!  Meanwhile, what is the 5th tree pictured on this page?  Leaf looks very much like my unknown Voiture fig.

Oooo ah...... I am going to try this. You have a HUGE back yard, wow!

Wow!

I'm nominating you to be the Southeastern Fig repository!

Do you have a count on how many varieties you now have?

I have experienced the generosity of the members here. There are no greedy bones here. Very caring individuals who want the

novice to succeed. Thanks to all that have helped me and thanks to Jimmie for helping Frank's hedge out. I'm really enjoying the

pictures and the thought that I might actually walk down the row one day is exciting. Keep up the great work!

I might change my spacing which is currently 15 feet to some thing smaller. I  could double my plants then!

Thanks for posting pictures of your wonderful hedge. I hope to have something like that someday. If you ever open a "pick your own" fig stand, I'm headed to Fl for a vacation! How many varieties?

Thanks to all with your nice comments.

Ben, you will need to visit and help with the espaliering.

Jimmie, I would very much like to post a video.

Jason, that particular photo is not of your Voiture but this one is (by way of Jimmie).

I would love to know what the fruit looks and tastes like. Any idea, pictures. Thanks for spreading this heirloom variety.

Charles, you know you have an open invitation. Many potted figs await you.

Goldie, I think I probably have 50-60 varieties in different stages of development.

I will update everyone as the hedge progresses.

great pics.

would love to see a video as well
(many videos from many of you more experienced members without naming you all)

Frank,
The Voiture you have is the one that fruited for me last year so I expect it to do even better this year. You can find that information in Jason's thread Unknown cuttings: "Hobart", "Schuyler", "Voiture #217" that details the history of those three cuttings.

Very nice. Keep the updates coming.

Great progress.  You'll be swimming in figs next year!

Great looking hedge Frank...it will be great to see it year by year...good luck.

Beautiful   Lots of new growth already.  Looking GOOD Frank.

That's an awesome setup Frank. What aspect or direction do you have the rows running? Do they get full morning sun and then filtered afternoon sun through the pines?

Ben, that's exactly the situation...early morning sun and then filtered for the rest of the day.

Nice!  Maybe I'll have to visit Tallahassee in August.

I'm still fiddling with layout for my orchard so it's good to see I am on the right track!

it will be awsome to see the fig hedges in a few years

Great work on that hedge!  Very nice!

You mentioned that you were planning on severe pruning due to the realtively short distance between plants.  How tall were you planning on letting them grow with the 3' spacing?

Your hedge is really shaping up. Looks like it has grown a lot since I was there. Looking real good. If I make it down that way maybe we can get together.

Hi Frank,

A terrific subject for posting and beautiful photos here!   Being fairly new to the forum and missing your first post, I am happy you resurrected it with this update.  Otherwise, I may have missed totally!

As a novice, still hatching out my first cuttings, I find these kinds of posting very informative and inspiring.   Like you, I have a little property and still formulating how and where I want to plant figs in the ground.   You guys are exposing me to so many possibilities…… single trunk tree, multi trunk/bush form, espalier, potting, blah, blah?   Geeeze, so many possibilities………. :-)

Thanks again, I will look forward to updates.

Hi,
Great set up and photos.
Luigi

One thing I know is that pine needles are very acid!  I have grown potatoes on the top of the ground covered with 100% pine needles.  For what it's worth.    JHinPA
