Heirloom Red Calabrian Fig (Sicilian Red)

I was born in Calabria and raised on figs until age 7. I remember the taste and aroma and texture of those figs like it was yesterday.

The cuttings rooted successfully and 2 years later it is 7 feet tall and the figs are starting to ripen.

It reminds me of Sal's Corleone in appearance but could be Sicilian Red?

How many crops has it produced?

Jest Brebea(sp) ?

Does appear to have italian heritage for what I have seen in person.

Chris

Yes it is Sicilian Red,as a common name.
Too bad the climate in some areas is not as good as in Italy or Sicily.
The rains here come in the wrong time in my climate most of the time.

FMD, what part of Calabria are you from. My dad is from Fiumefredo and I was there a few years ago and never took any cuttings home

Herman, thanks so much for the ID. One of the great things about this fig is that it has resisted the effects of almost daily heavy rains and high humidity for months now. This fig means a lot to me due to its history.

Fespo, I was born in the Province of Cosenza, Calabria. Fiumefreddo (Cold River) is in Sicily, right?

Chris, these are main crop figs. It was planted in the ground Sept of last year. A late freeze killed it to the ground in February and since then it has put out 7 feet of growth and still going.
