Hello

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and wanted to say Hi.

I live in Newnan, Ga 8A - I see that Newnandawg also lives around here. Moved here last year and currently living in an apartment and planning on buying a house this year. Figs will be a priority at the house.

I currently have a Celeste I bought from Ty Ty(I know) ten years ago. When we decided to move from FL to GA, I rooted some cuttings a year ahead of time and brought the new tree with me. They told me it was an 'improved' Celeste. The figs match the description and taste of the Celeste I have seen. However, the figs begin ripening late June here in Ga and continue to ripen until November. This appears to be an unusual characteristic for a Celeste.

I also have small trees of Brown Turkey, Desert King and Panache.

I  have room for a few more small pots outside my apartment. I'm looking for Smith, Italian Honey and Col de Dame. Would love many more but space is limited this spring. Over the last year we have expanded the required lot size of out new house to one acre minimum to accommodate plenty of figs.

I will be pruning my Celeste shortly if anyone is interested in a trade or SASE.

Looking forward to the discussions and my education.

How do I get my information to appear at the bottom of my posts? I've looked around but seemed to have missed the instruction.

For anyone that wants to trade I can also throw in some heirloom tomato seeds. My two passions: figs and tomatoes.

Welcome!  Good idea on expanding the lot.  I know my next house will be sitting on at least an acre.  :)
The 1/2 acre I currently have is needed for the kids to expend their energy, so all I can plant in ground is about 6 trees.  The rest will be in pots.

Hi Beachwreck!  You an ex surfer or something? :-))  Welcome to the forum!

To put your signature and zone info and wish list into your posts, just go to the control panel at the upper right of the screen, and fill in the signature part on your profile!

Good luck with your property search!  We searched for an acre+ for about 6 months here in Southern California, and watched prices rise.  4 times, we got beat out of offers.  Finally, this last one took, and we are in negotiations with the bank on a short sale on 1.4 acres with a nice house and lots of room for our vineyard and figs.  They countered $30K higher, and we countered $20K lower than their counter.  This could go on forever, but yesterday we got the termite and inspection reports and title report, so it's looking good!  You should get pre-approved for a loan or have cash.  That helps a lot!

So thank you for your nice introduction!  Again, welcome!

HI Beachwreck!  Welcome to the forum - you will learn more about figs here then anywhere else!  It's a very lively and passionate group too.

From what I hear about Celeste, it seems you got lucky - sets fruit and keeps giving all season -Wow!!

Thank you everyone on the signature help, it seems to have worked.

Desert Dance, we lived in Sarasota, FL for ten years, two blocks from the beach, hence the name. No surfing for me these days, too many years have passed.

Welcome, Fred!

Welcome Fred!! go for two acres, hahaha. the more room for figs and other fruit trees the better. good luck on the home search.

Welcome Fred good to have you here.

Welcome to the forum Beachwreck.

Welcome Fred !

Welcome Fred (neighbor). Great place to learn all about your figaholicism.  You obviously have it. We'll have to hook up. I sent you a PM (private message). Look
at the upper right portion of the page.

Welcome!  Just bite the bullet and go for 25 acres!  You know you want to!

Hello Fred,
Welcome to the forum community.
I purchased an Improved Celeste last year and it did produce over a long period of time, which I prefer. I believe that is a characteristic of the "Improved Celeste", from the information that I found on this website. Lots to learn here.

Thanks to everyone for your kind replies. I'm looking forward to sharing and learning with a big emphasis on the learning.

rcantor, would love the 25 acres. The Mrs. however wants to be in a subdivision or at least an area that looks like one. I'm hoping for a double lot that approaches 2 acres. I can probably get by with that.

Thanks again all.

Fred,

Neighbors are important, and the Mrs probably wants that.  I certainly do!  Love my neighbors!  We looked at really rural properties with 8+ acres, almost bought one, but who do you share your coffee with?  What do you do when your man goes fishing for a week in Montana?  If you have children, they really want to play with other kids.

My grand kids asked me seriously, when they found out about the new house to be "Nana, Are there neighbors?"  They asked that probably because one set of grandparents lives on 40 acres, and there is nobody around.

Figs are nice.  All trees are nice.  But somone who loves you is much better!

I'm sure you will find something.  shortsalesuperstars is a good site explaining the process.  Lots of realtors on there vent their frustrations with getting short sales through, and I have learned a lot there!  Any tme prices are rising, it's tough to get a good deal!

Good luck to you!

Suzi

Suzi, thanks for the heads up on shortsalesuperstars. Looks interesting. I will check it out in more detail tonight. A short sale or REO would be great.

You are so right about neighbors. Plus our motto around here is 'keep Momma happy'.

Our boys are grown but we have one grandson so far that will be visiting regularly so we want to have neighborhood kids for him to play with.

Welcome to figs4fun, Fred. Just to let you know, TyTy is a bad word around these parts. If you are ever in Tallahassee,...

Welcome Fred,
My Celeste has only produced for one year so I can tell you what it did for me one year (if that helps) It produced flushes of figs for me on new growth so the first flush came for me in August and then if the weather would have been good for another 3-4 weeks I would have gotten a second flush in November from the last growth spurt.  I left them on but once Sandy came through the weather had no chance to help me out and I had to knock them all off.  My Celeste came from UCD.

Fred, not sure if you know what UCD is.  University of California at Davis.  It's a place where they do a lot of studies on many plants, and figs are one of those.  They will ship cuttings to you for free, but you would need a fed ex account linked to a credit card (also free), and they charge you shipping only for your cuttings.

They have time lines for ordering.  It's too late for this year, but there is always next year.  I usually get my order in early and then I forget about it.

It always amazes me when I open that package from them early spring.  They do all this and freely share.  I can't help but worry that one day this might end.

Suzi
