Hello

Greetings Fig World!

I am a newcomer to this world, fueled by fond memories of my Great-grandmother's fig preserves. I have spent most of my adult life dreaming of growing my own figs and now I am about to actually do it.  I've got 3 fig trees on order from a greenhouse in CT:  Black Mission, Ischia, and Chicago Hardy.  I'm here so I can learn how to take care of them and see them through the Buffalo winters.

My family runs a roughly 2 acre farm in the middle of the city of Buffalo, so we're not new to growing things in general, but our experience is mostly in vegetables and plants you would expect to find growing in zone 5b.

Cheers!

Welcome Fuzzymurrey, you're going to love it here!

Welcome aboard. You have 3 nice cultivars to start with. You are lucky to be living close to so many fignuts in Southern Ontario and lucky to have 2 acres in the middle of Buffalo.
It would be nice to have your location and zone in your signature.

Welcome to the forum fuzzymurrey.

Welcome!  Those are good tasting figs and there are others you may consider as well.  Search for Niagra Black, Nordland and read the thread on cold hardy figs.  Are you planning on growing in pots and keeping them in a garage or outbuilding for the Winter or planting outside with winter protection, or some of each.  Some crazy people move over 100 plants in and out of their garage each Spring and Fall.  Don't ask me how I know  :)

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome from Southern California! Ask questions, and you will get answers! We love pictures here, too!

welcome ,fuzzy . you will find the people here very nice !

enjoy your new hobby man and dont get crazy like me....

Bob, I haven't decided what exactly I'm doing with them.  I'm thinking I have a few years of smallish pots (they come in 4" pots), so I can make that decision a little later.  I'm intrigued by the "step over" pruning method (pictured and described by hoosierbanana) and think I'll do some investigating in that direction.

Welcome

Welcome Fuzz,

I'm zone 5b-6a and I've been thinking of trying the "step over" pruning method myself.
It's the winter chewing varments you have to consider when making such decisions though.
It would be an aweful lot of work just to lose them to the "chewers".

Welcome

Welcome!
