Hello

Hello there. I am new to the forum but I have 2 three year old Brown Turkey fig trees with which I have been pleased (when the birds decide to share, that is). I am in a suburban area near Raleigh, NC and this year my wife suggested we plant more fig trees! She doesn't need to twist my arm for that at all.
I have been getting info from this site and others and I think I have settled on three varieties and I would like to hear your thoughts... especially those of you in NC that have these varieties.

I am considering buying 2 of each of the following varieties to grow in pots for the first couple of years. After a year or three I expect that I will select 2 or 3 trees to plant in the ground along the fenceline between my backyard neighbor and I.
- Celeste
- Hardy Chicago
- LSU Purple

As you see, I didn't go too exotic. I went with the ones that I had the most information about.
There are few pleasures more splendid than a fresh ripe fig. We also plan on making spreads with them and drying what is left over.
I would love to hear your thoughts, cautionary tales, opinions, etc.

Regards,
Tony

Hello Tony and welcome to the forum. Those would be good choices for my area and I am sure you will
get some good info from NC forum members.

Thanks, Mike!

Welcome to the forum, Tony

Welcome Tony. I grow Celeste and CH in NY and think you picked some good work horses and they taste great too ! I'm sure you'll get more info/suggestions, etc from some of the NC members.

Welcome, I'm still new myself. Those are 3 good choices, I don't have a HC yet but I have Celeste and LSU purple. My LSU purple is still in a pot and about 3 or 4' tall and I got to taste a few off of it this summer and everyone says they don't get good till about 4 or 5 years old but mine were pretty good so I can't wait to see how much better they get. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum!  You will find a wealth of information on here.  And don't be surprised if you end up with more than the 3 varieties you have picked out.  The pictures are just too tempting.

nice to meetcha, tony. you'll have lots of fun here.

Welcome!! There is alot of info and nice people on this site.

Good, solid choices.

A happy Welcome to the forum.

Perhaps to consider planting LSU O'Rourke. It is reportedly a very productive tree and it is supposed to be an improvement over Celeste.

Welcome!  I'd get one of each then supplement with different varieties and keep them all.  Desert King will fruit earlier than the others which will give you a longer season of getting figs.

Welcome welcome!

Welcome, Tony.  You will find an abundance of information and advice here but be careful, fig growing is addictive.  I just started in the late spring and now have 23 trees and multiple cuttings rooting as we speak...lol.

 Hello Tony,
I began fig collecting this Spring. It just snuck up on me... so save room for the inevitable, you'll likely end up with a few more fig trees than you're planning on.  ~~   :-)

Welcome Tony and enjoy.

Each persons taste is there own, but I would pick something other than LSU Purple.  While at LSU Fig day this past year I had the opportunity to taste LSU Purple in all stages of ripeness and was not at all impressed.  These trees were 10+ years old and so should have been producing at their best.  Consider Violette de Bordeaux (VdB) or Marseilles Black VS (MBVS) or any others you can research here on the figgy forum, but I think you will be happy with either of those as an alternate to LSU Purple.

Welcome to the forum

Here in zone 6b illinois I have several kinds now, this is an adictive hobbie.
So make sure you got space. Three won't be enough ;-)

As for celeste I have one along with a HC. In the five years I have had the celeste I have never gotten a rip fig from it. They all seem to drop off right before they get ripe. Going to give it one more year to see how it goes.
No complaints from my HC fast grower good fruit. Very hardy. Got a few others I just planted out this year (thanx to the many members). That I can't wait to try. Among them VdB, MvsB, several unknowns, and many others. Still planning on getting a few more. Keeps me out of trouble though.

Thank you all for your warm welcome and your suggestions.
It seems that some fig varieties are easier to come by than others. Maybe one day I will have enough land to put them all on. :-)
Tony
