Hello

Hey folks, Todd here. I got my first fig tree as a cutting from my wife's great aunt about 4 years ago, didn't even know I liked figs until we started picking them fresh off the tree. Found the forum, and a whole world of figs I didn't know existed, while trying to find a site to ID the type of tree we have. Really looking forward to learning from you guys.

Can anyone point me to a good identification site? I am sure these are extremely common, they look like every other fig tree here in south Louisiana but I would like to add a couple of other varieties to the "orchard" and didn't want to duplicate what I already have.

Thanks in advance

You could postsome pictures here and there are plenty of people with a good eye who can give you a good idea what it is.

welcome to the forum. posting pix of the leaf, and the fig will work, if it's well known variety.

Hi Todd,

Welcome to the Fig Forum!

The best way to ID your fig will be to find out from your family member what they had.  People can give an opinion here of what it looks like, and some figs are pretty unique to the point that they can be recognized, but you may never be certain.

Good luck on getting your fig collection growing!

Welcome to the forum, lots of good figgers in South Louisiana.

Welcome Todd!

Welcome to the forum, Todd.

Follow link in post #3 and see what may look similar and you can always post pictures of your plant in leaf and
figs whole and cut in half when the time comes.

Welcome Todd!

Also welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum. Before you start looking through Jon's wonderful hay stack pictures of figs, I think you need to answer a few questions:

1. What month does the figs ripen in your climate?
2. How many crops do you get?
3. What color is the fig when it ripens?
4. Does it have an open or close eye?
5. Does it ooze honey from the eye?
6. Does the figs split after a rain?
7. Are the figs large, medium or small?

Answers questions like these can narrow down your search.

welcome and enjoy

Welcome!

Welcome! Might start your ID search with Celeste and Brown Turkey (Celeste is the smaller fig and very sweet, Brown turkey is a larger fig and less flavorful most of the time). Both have similar enough coloration (often a sort of mixed amberish/reddish/light purplish color) to be confused easily. If not one of those (and there a bunch of different strains of both), then might look at Brunswick [aka Magnolia]<--this one is kind of unique because it often has slender fingerlike lobes on the leaves; LSU Purple; and Alma. Hopefully that will get you started...

Best of luck and welcome,
Rick

Welcome to the forum.

Todd, welcome to the forum, You'll have a blast ;)
post some pictures of the tree, the leaf, the fruit when ripe and cut in half to show the insides...Ask the relative about it and get some history, most trees come with history and it's great to have it as a conversational piece... :)

Aloha and welcome to the forum, Todd.

Hi Todd!  Welcome to the world of figs!  You are in a great growing location so start digging up the lawn now!  :>)

Welcome, Here's a site that at least has pictures of the figs. Seems like they could have picked a leaf at the same time. The LSU ag center has bred a bunch of figs for your climate. They have a world of info on figs available.  http://www.lsuagcenter.com/NR/rdonlyres/69DF3014-F313-4784-AFEB-EAAC4125406E/61880/pub3018LouisianaFigsLOWRES.pdf  There's lots more but I didn't bookmark the index and now it eludes me. If you're near a campus you might ask them to identify your fig.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I will post pictures once the tree puts on figs, I can get a picture of leaves later today. From what digging I have done so far, it would seem likely it is Celeste. The figs are about golf ball sized, purplish brown, very sweet with a reddish purple center.

Nobody in the family has any idea, they just know it is a fig tree. My great aunt-in-law pots clippings every year in oyster buckets for anyone who wants them.

Any recommendations from South LA folks (or anyone else) on varieties that would work well in this area (we live just south of Baton Rouge)?

Welcome.

I've read S. LA Is great for figs! Heavy rains near harvest time will ruin some of the fruit though.

Here is the tree and some leaf shots. Sorry about the lack of detail in the full tree shot.
