Hello!

Newbie here, never even tried a real fig but love fig newtons and love to grow different things so thought what the heck!

I'm located in West Central Arkansas around Fort Smith.  The figs I'm starting with are LSU Purple, LSU Tiger and Brown Turkey.  All should be delivered next week.

In preparation, three holes were dug and inserted pails with the bottoms cut out and good soil will be used in planting.

Hope I like these varieties!

Otherwise I have a Fuyu persimmon at three years old with first fruits, also being air layered and a Hachiya coming this Fall.  Five varieties of bamboo and I grow various medicinal and edible fungi on logs, Shiitake, Reishi, Turkey Tail and a few others.

Anybody else from Arkansas here?

Welcome to the forum, Charlie.

You have a nice mix of plants. Keeping it interesting.

There is a member in Ft. Smith. Not too far from I-40. He doesn't post but checks in from time to time.
Maybe he will see this and contact you? Very good gentleman.

Also there are several more members around Ar. you could hear from them.

Good luck.

Welcome

Charlie, welcome to the forum.

Hi Charlie, welcome the THE forum :)

Hello, most of us started out just like you. Figs trees somehow take over your thought processes, so watch out, your probably going to be finding a whole lot of new areas to be growing figs at your place in the future.

Hi Charlie!  Welcome - as they say, figs grow on you!

Hey Charlie!  Welcome!  I'd lose the bamboo if I were you.......(if you even can..Bamboo is a challenge to destroy..It will come up in your bedroom, and can be your worst nightmare!)  But all the rest sounds great!

Hang here and you will make many friends.  We trade cuttings mostly in late fall/winter, when things go dormant.

Welcome!

Hello Charlie. Welcome to the forum

Norhayati

Wow thanks for the great welcome!

The day is barely done and already ordered a few more varieties to try.

Kadota, Desert King, Celeste, Lattarula, Black Mission, and Magnolia.

My brother has a fig tree I never knew about and he said it bears small figs every year which the ants love.  He's going to get a cutting in water for me to play with.

Watched a video yesterday about ant control where the fella used caution tape and tanglefoot sticky stuff for ant control and the thought hit me regarding plumbers PTFE teflon tape from the hardware store.  It has a really slick surface, is flexible and fairly inexpensive.  I was wondering if ants could even walk on it without slipping off.  If so we could possibly omit the tanglefoot.

Welcome Charlie. You'll find a wealth of information using the search feature and almost instant help and advice by asking. Newbie here as well and already feel at home.

Aloha and welcome, Charlie!  There you go, give in to the fever.  9, 10, 11...

Hi Charlie,
Welcome to the forum.
Your yard seems to have some space ... Time to fill that up :)

Your collection is already nice. If you could, try a "desert king" - just check if that cultivar is ok in your zone.
In which USDA zone are you ?
- Yesterday I spotted a tree here with ripening figs, and I have to check but those figs made me think of the photos of "desert king" . I'm jealous... I want one for me :°°|

As for ants, don't try the tape - it can rot the bark and trunk with the moisture that will stay in between the tape and the trunk.
Try lemons split in two and lemon juice at the base of the tree .

I'm in zone 7, closer to 8 than 6.  Pots are not out of the question.
