I have been lurking on these forums for a few weeks, reading everything I can here and elsewhere online about growing figs.  I am a 'virgin' fig grower but plan to get a few varieties to try here in zone 6a Southwest Pennsylvania.  This forum is a great source of knowledge - thanks to all who are contributing!

I might pepper the forum with questions in the near future, but for now I have only one - how do you keep from becoming fig-addicted like most of you seem to be?  :) 

Anyway, looking forward to adding fig trees to my orchard (though these will likely not be inground like the rest of my fruit).

There is no vaccination against fig addiction and no 12 step program or rehab center. Quite the contrary, you can go to UCD and gorge on figs:)
Don't worry, you and all around you will get used to it and you won't remember what it's like to not be surrounded by figs!

In time when you you get lots of fig plants and have to root prune to properly take care of them you will slowly lose the addiction and clamor only for the best tasting ones and perhaps cut down on the similar tasting ones etc as their is no need for them.

Hi Ed. I am in the Beechview neighborhood of Pittsburgh. If you find yourself in the area I can start you off with some cuttings this fall and probably air layer you a tree or three in the spring. Just pm me.

Shhh.  Most of the Fig Addicts on here are in denial and / or oblivious to their plight.

Once I got more than 3 trees it quickly went to 40.  Welcome to the forum, check out Bass's posts/website if you haven't already I think he's near enough by to see some good varieties for you.

Addiction to figs? Is this possible. I started with 1 tree now have 28 and planning on more. But does this count as addiction. I am looking for more land just to have more figs..... maybe there might be somthing there.... nah.

Fig fever hits before you know it. You will start rooting cutting and before you know it will have em all around.

now that you've joined, abandon ye all hope. a few months ago i came here for info on a fig i bot as a houseplant.

now i have 5 trees plus a zillion cuttings i'm trying to grow.

i have no idea how that happened.

If you want to get a quick start take a look at Jon's listings on Ebay.  Some real nice plants to kick start your addicti...  oh um , collection.

After reading in this forum for a while I am not sure if the biggest addiction is:
- eating figs
- tasting new varieties of figs
- collecting fig varieties
- discovering previously unknown figs
- posting on the Figs for Fun Forum
- all of the above in conjunction

Anyway, thanks to all for the warm welcome! Nice to feel at home with such a group of good people. Looking forward to learning more from all of you.

You might be an addict if.... you've added more than ten kinds of figs to your wish list in the last three days
You might be an addict if.... when your driving around and looking into yards to see if there is a fig trees there
You might be an addict if.....you have boxes of damp moss in your closet with sticks stuck in it....
I could go on...
