Hello and fig ID please

Hi,

I'm pretty new to fig growing. In fact, until quite recently I wasn't really aware figs could be grown outside for fruit over here, in England. However, now I'm aware, and furthermore learned they can be grown in pots (I've pretty much run out of room in the ground), I can't wait to get started.

I bought a Brunswick a few weeks ago and yesterday I picked a very cheap mystery fig (at less than £3 I thought it was worth a gamble). I've attached a photo of it.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what variety it might be? The label gave no clues. (In fact, part way through it refered to it was a kiwi fruit!)

Welcome .............the link does not work?
I am also based here in the UK,London.

Hi Lisa. Thanks for the welcome. I hope I've managed to attach a photo now :o)

Hello Mithril,  (is your name connected with the rare silver?).

I looked at the photo, and though I have a few possible guesses, the truth is that fig leaf morphology is extremely variable, especially in a plant so young as this.  But keep that tree and grow it well!  (It may even be one of those on you wish list).  When the tree is bigger and makes fruit, take photos of the ripe fruit  (outside and sliced in half longitudinally), together with a mature "typical" leaf.  It'll be some time before you can get a real ID, but some of the folks on this forum are very good at identification based on those sorts of pictures.  (Also the "eye" on the unripe and the ripe fruit are good indicators... but ripe fruit is pretty essential for identification).  Until then call it something like "xxx Unknown" (you get to choose the "xxx").

Welcome to the forum, and enjoy growing your trees.

Thanks Mike. I shall tend it as best I can. Would be great to one day have an ID, even if it turns out to be the ever popular (over here anyway) Brown Turkey, lol.

For now I shall refer to it as 'Wilkinson's Unknown' (Wilkinson's is the name of the shop I bought it from).

Ps. Yes, Mithril like the metal :o)
