Hello Every one

Hi my name is Harley I prefer to be called lee I live in white marsh pa. I am a young buck at 31 and have recently discovered fis and am eager to learn all I can. At the moment I have a celest very small and a peters honey. I have been using this site for the past few months and am ready to get the fig addiction!
Thank you guys for having such a helpful site

Welcome to the forum. You have found the right place to ride on with the fig fever. There are many yummie variants & I am sure you will progress to have more variants.

Yes Welcome Lee. Where in pa is white marsh? I live in south jersey and am in Philadelphia all the time. Every one here is helpful.

welcome lee.....best of luck with your figs!

Paully thank you. For the greeting. Theman I ready just very limited on space.
The celt I live near Plymouth meeting about 20 minutes away from the city. I live in a condo so I need to keep my figs in a pot. I read that peters honey is great in a pot. Any other potted plant suggestions would be appreciated
Also I just ate my first fig today. I used the picture as my avatar. Guess it needed to let it stay on the tree for a little longer. How do you tell with a green fig?

Welcome to the F4F Lee. You've come to the right place to feed your fig fever.

If you haven't done so yet, you will find the search engine here to be very useful. So, if there's anything you're not sure about or want to know more about, just try the search button. There is so much great stuff that's been discussed here at one time or another.

Of course, if you have questions, feel free to ask. Most everyone is very helpful and ready to answer any questions you may have.

I would get yourself a Violette de Bordeaux, it is reportedly great for pot culture and has a wallop of a good, small fruit.  They normally have them for sale/ready to ship in the fall at http://www.ediblelandscaping.com

Welcome to the forum, Lee! As for determining ripeness on a green fig, it varies with the variety sometimes. Generally, drooping at the neck/stem and softening of the fruit to the point of almost mushiness are good indicators. Some will have checking/cracking of the skin that will appear as cuts. Also, if it breaks off the branch with only slight pressure is another good indicator. Good luck!

Welcome Lee, nice to have another fig grower close by. I'm in Philly

Welcome to the forum Lee.

Pretty soon you will say the heck with the condo rules and move on to a much bigger place where you will grow and enjoy well over 150 variants like most of us do.

Happy figging

Satellitehead Thanks for the Link. This place is cheep! I payed 70$ for my peters honey fig. Does ant one know about that Texas ba1 fig that they sell?
I will need more space soon but I can't right now. Thanks for the encouragement hahaha 150? Wow who has that many?

Lee,
Welcome to the forum!   I think you will find yourself haunting the local store looking for markdowns on pots/soil, etc.  Then you bookmark every nursery online, start compiling a list of your want list, develop a spreadsheet for your variants-purchase date-source-history of fig-other names-etc.  And of course--you visit this forum daily to catch up on what's happening.
I was bitten in mid-March, and take care of 29 varieties.  I should end 2011 with close to 40 different types.  Needless to say, I think I need to limit myself to no more than 20 in 2012!!!
Soon you will find yourself making roadtrips to visit forum members (Hi Bill, see you soon Mario!!).
   Again, welcome!!
