Hello everybody.

Just wanted to introduce myself.
I'm Rui. I live in a small town half way between Rhode Island and New Haven, CT.
Being of Portuguese descent, growing up on a farm, and now living on two acres,
it was just a matter of time before I'd rediscover figs.
Last summer I bought a Peter's Honey from a local nursery. Even enjoyed some figs before temps dropped. Then I really got the itch.
This spring I'm expecting a lot of (small) fig plants from Almost Eden. 10 to be exact, all different varieties.
I will have them in pots, at least for the first 5 years or so. I'll start trying some cuttings, and maybe zone 6B/7 will be zone 8 in time to start planting in the ground!!
Kidding...
The posts I've been reading have been very informative.
It's the photos that I like the most.
I hope to someday be able to share (photos, ideas, knowledge, and cuttings).

Hope you stay awhile.  Welcome!

Thank you.

Welcome Ruuting
You are starting with a bang, 10 plants in the first year of fig fever. I hope you enjoy them with a lot of fun.

Something about figs, when you eat it as a child, it really have a sentimental value. Welcome.

Welcome, Rui, glad to see you join the forum.  Many very knowledgeable fig folks here.  And, many of us have the same experience from our cultural backgrounds (mine being Italian) remembering figs from our childhood, our nonna, etc.  Sounds like you're off to a great start, let us know what varieties you're selected.  I have Peter's Honey, very sweet and delicious, perfectly named as it does taste as sweet as honey.

Welcome, Rui.  What part of Portugal does your family come from?

Welcome Ruuting
This is a great forum you will have lots of fun and figs before you know it.

Welcome Rui!

Hi, Ruuting!

Welcome. If you're careful you can squeeze a lot of figs onto 2 acres.

Hi Ruuting - glad you found us!

Hi Rui...welcome to the Forum...best of luck with your new crop of fig trees...hope they bring back all of those good childhood memories.

welcome to the forum. portugal seems to have lot of good figs, i think there are few that're available around here from there.

Welcome Rui! I'm in nw CT. I bought the 5 mature trees I have from a gentleman in rocky hill not too far from Hartford. It seemed like he wanted to get rid of more of his trees, maybe he'll post them on Craigslist and you can jump start your collection this spring.

Welcome from me too Ruuting!  Is that a different way to spell "Rooting?"  ;-))

Good luck with all your figs!  Happy collecting!

Suzi

Replying to all on my lunch break:
Suzi - yes, it's a combination on rooting and my name.
CTFIGS - I work in the Rocky hill area all the time. Did the gentleman you mentioned have a bay laurel tree for sale too? I may know who that was.
Pete (bullet08) - it seems Portugal has a lot of desirable figs. I've fantasized about going to Madeira with a pair of pruning shears!
Vince - I hope one of the plants I got is similar to the massive green figs one of my childhood neighbors had. You could only eat about 5 to fill up.
Michael - I already have a 100' long blueberry grove, some grape vines, some fruit trees, the majority of the property is on a low meadow that forms a pocket of colder air, so I don't think the figs would survive down there. Besides, there are lots of critters around here, I would love to plant them in the ground and watch them spread, though.
Harvey C - I'm from the north, the Tras-os-montes province, in the Douro region.
Patty S - I had a Peter's Honey also, and I ordered the following:
Improved Celeste
Conadria
Verdone
Deanna
Black Mission
Marylane seedless ( in hopes of converting my wife into a fig lover, the seeds freak her out)
Yellow Magnolia
Banana
Wuhan
Stella

Thank you to everybody for the warm welcome. Hopefully I won't killl all the plants.
I know there are a lot of fancy fig cuttings, but I have no experience with rooting them. When I've dabbled a little with my plants, maybe I'll try making a Frankenfig.

Warm welcome to the forum Ruu

Rui, spent a few days in Chaves in October 2004 for an international chestnut conference.  Loved the area.  I liked Madeira also, which is where my father's parents immigrated from nearly 100 years ago.

Welcome Rui, this is a great place to enjoy and share your fig experiences.

Welcome!

Thank you.
Harvey, I know exactly where Chaves is. We'd go past that town on trips to Spain. It was a long time ago, though. I was 12 yrs. old when we moved to the States.
