Hello Everyone- new guy

Hello,
My name is Mike and I would like to thank everyone here for the valuable resources and knowledge I have found on this forum, and would like to introduce myself. I have used this forum to learn for quite a while, but only recently have become a member. I live in southern NJ (zone 7a) and am in my mid 20's.
I have always loved figs. My grandmother has had figs in her garden in NYC that she brought over from Italy. My great uncle in Italy has an amazing tree over 2 stories tall that produces baseball sized delicious figs (see pic below). He picks them from his 2nd floor balcony.
I have started growing figs on my own within the last 3 years. Thanks to the polar vortex all of my figs died to ground level except the few small plants i had in pots. As of right now i have a few chicago hardy plants and the unknown variety my grandmother brought from italy.

Thank you all again for the resources and community you provide. I look forward to expanding my hobby and learning. Please feel free to advise me in any way.

I would advise you to get cuttings from your great-uncle's tree. :)

Is the unk from your grandmother the same as the one in the pics?  Nice looking fig.  Love the size.

Welcome!

Welcome Mike, I'm from Italy originally and go back often, where in Italy is your uncle from?

Welcome Mike.

Welcome Mike, time to start planning for 2015!

Welcome Mike!  That is some fig!  I bet you will get lots of offers to trade for cuttings of that, just for the novelty of its size.  I would certainly trade you for cuttings of that, PM me if interested and I will give you a list of varieties I will have next month.

I live in DE and work in S. Jersey, Deptford area.

Phil

Hey Mike and welcome.
The figs in the photo are beautiful.  How di they taste and where is your nonna from?

Nonna is italian for grandma so probably Italy. I have a nonna. ;)

Welcome to the forum Mike.  I agree you will get lots of trade offers when your uncle prunes that giant tree.  You have joined at a great time since Jon has his cutting sale next month.  Lots of cutting available.  I recently moved from NJ (2 years ago) to NC but am often back up there.  Good growing.
