hello from a new member

Good afternoon. I am an established orchid grower (about 400 plants) and just added fig trees to my home. I currently have 4 varieties of figs growing in pots; genoa, marsailles, brown turkey and kadota. They were propogated by a local grower and are 3-5 feet tall.

I do a lot of homework when I get involved in a topic and enjoy getting information from others as well as sharing what I know about growing.  I look forward to speaking with you.

welcome to the forum.

i love orchids. it just that they don't like me. once i even set up corner of my livingroom with humidifier and all that thinking to get them going, but they never bloom again once the flowers that came with it die. we still get them now and then.. but they never do anything..

on the other hand, i'm having much better luck with figs.. and i can eat them once they are ripe.

Hello dhsandberg''''
Welcome to this fig forum.  Scores of knowledgeable posters here.  Throw away your textbooks on growing figs.  Here you'll find information that's current, and relevant.  You will be able to grow figs without any problems, especially since you already grow culturally difficult plants....your orchids.  With figs it's basically... plant them and watch them grow.

Ask any questions, and you will get answers, as well as opinions based on observation, and experience.

Good Luck with your fig trees.

Frank

PS...It will help us answer your questions if you tell us your climate zone.

Hello Frank.  Thanks for the welcome.  I live 30 minutes north of you, zone 6.

Anybody need any information on orchids, I'm your man...Meanwhile I'll look to you for help on the figs.

Dennis

I look after somebody's orchid collection, and used to have 50 or so plants of my own. I either killed them with neglect, or gave them away when blooming. I have only a few left that I really enjoy the fragrance of: Stanhopea wardii, Maxillaria tenuifolia, and Encyclia alata.

Ever try water culture? My parents can handle it and the only other living things in their house are succulents. I still have to treat them for scale and remove dead roots occasionally, but have been amazed at the plant's resilience. They are in a south facing sunroom as well!

I know this is not an orchid forum but cattleya would also do well in zone 7a in a south facing window.

Welcome to another NY state fig grower, from the same.  (But I'm up near Binghamton, zone 5).  I see you're in Somers, the birthplace of the American circus.  Though Old Bet was originally intended to help with farm work, it probably wasn't fig farming.

Yes the cats are doing the best. My parents would never be able to keep up with them in containers though. I have west facing windows for mine.

Dennis....

We are neighbors!

PS....Now, I read in your profile that you are located in Somers, NY.  Very close.

Welcome again.

Welcome to the forum Dennis,

Orchids and Plumeria are next in line for me. Have to get a greenhouse first.

Welcome to the forum.
Careful with figs Dennis, half of my orchid greenhouse was taken over by fig propagation as well as some of my outdoor shade area.
I wouldn't have it any other way though.

Welcome Dennis,

I live in Westchester as well (Sleepy Hollow).  There are many figs growing in the ground around here, many with protection, some without.  My neighbor has trees he brought from his native Sicily, but he grows them in pots and keeps them in the garage in the winter.  I think with the new hardiness map this year I'm in zone 7a now, perhaps since we're right by the Hudson.  Maybe it's slightly colder where you are.

I just started growing figs last year, and folks have been extremely helpful answering my questions.  Be careful though; it can become an addition.  I have way more fig trees than I should (just ask my wife).

Welcome

Rob

Welcome to the forum, D!

OK, my turn!  Welcome!  I know nothing about orchids, a lot about wine grapes, and learning about figs.

Great to see a fig and orchid grower here.... welcome Dennis, I also share the fig world with orchids. In South Florida's sub-tropical climate it is fairly easy....This is a great forum to learn about fig..... Thanks to Jon..

so I see I have lots of company in the fig/orchid growers club.  I was president of the local orchid society for 5 years and will be happy to answer any questions you might have - but I think we should do it via regular email so we do not clog this site with orchid questions.

I am in Somers, NY and see that responses here have come from my neighbors in Westchester and the Bronx.

I would love to trade cuttings or plants as I do with my orchids.  I have a branch on a branch that I will be pruning off of my Marsailles shortly.  anyone interested?

Welcome to the forum. You will find that we have the nicest, most helpful people here. All good folks and great enablers to the addiction of figs. :)

Welcome.

Strange combination - orchids and figs. I have small collection of Phrags, Paphs and some Cattleyas and a few others to entertain me and just going the way of figs lately, like you. Good luck in all endeavors.

I would like to thank you all for the welcome.  I am looking forward to continuing good conversations with all of you.

Dennis

Welcome aboard!

You're a brave man growing anything here you live. I can't imagine the cold weather you have and it seems to last forever.

Later I may have an orchid question or two that I'll PM or e-mail you with.

Welcome!  There are a few Marseilles.  There's M. VS Black, M. Monticello and White Marseilles.  And those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.  Do you know which yours is?  Jon lists these which have many synonyms:

MARSEILLAISE
MARSEILLES
MARSEILLES VS
MARSELLAISE

Charles, you are welcome to ask any orchid question you have - and yes, I like growing things and will try just about anything.

rcantor, I am not sure which Marsailles I have though it was described as Marsailles white by the local grower from whom I bought the 5' tree.  At this size I ahould have some fruit this year and will know just what it is.
