Hello from Russia! :)

Hi everybody! My name is Elena, I'm from Russia.

The first thing I want to do is to thank all the participants of the forum for the sharing information and your experience. This really helps me!

My garden is situated near Moscow at 5th zone. I got my first fig tree 12 years ago. I do not know its name but I assume it is Adriatic. The Dalmatic and Brown Turkey joined to my collection some years ago. They grow in the pots outside and overwinter in the cellar. Thank to my husband, one of them was replanted in the ground this summer. It is going to overwinter this way (btw, it's Brown Turkey).

Very nice!  I like your over wintering idea!

It's a nice setup, I'm guessing you bury the fig and cover it with something on top?

Thank you, guys!

Yes, it will be covered with the plastic foam. I hope it will help my fig tree to overwinter and my work won't go in vain.

I would put more than just a layer of foam on it  - a couple feet of mulch or soil would help insulate on top of the foam if you get seriously cold temperatures in the winter.

Where in Russia are you from?  How cold are your winters?

Welcome Elena. You have a lovely garden!

Nice Garden Elena and welcome to the forum

Congratulations on getting figs in Z5!  Best of luck with them and welcome to the forum.

Hey there Elena. So glad to have you here. You have a beautiful garden and Figs!

Thanks for your comments! I live in 5th zone and there is enough of snow in winter. The temprature in winter can reach -13-20F. I want to put a "blanket" (a bag) of the leaves under the cover. It will be covered with the thick layer (about 1,64 feet) of snow in winter.

I hope you will report back in the spring on your results.  It looks like your husband put a lot of work into making that sunken growing chamber.  Good luck with it!

Welcome to the forum Elena! I live in a similar climate so I am very interested to know the outcome of your recessed beds.

I want to thank all of you for warm greeting once again. I will be very glad if my experience helps you anyway! I will keep you up to date!

Welcome, Elena!  Lovely garden.  I enjoy everything "Garden."  I just planted, potatoes, garlic, onion, bok choy and, Qinuoa; red, green, yellow (for the first time).  I am learning more about planting a Kiwi vine soon.  We'll see how it goes.  I'll post pictures later.

Thanks for sharing your photos.

There is a proverb in Russia: "It's better to see once than to hear thousand times". So, there are photos of my setup :) Size of the hole: lenght -  6f, width - 3f and deepth - 4f A foam box and a concerte box are inside of the hole. The concerte helps to save foam and to keep the heat during cold summer nights.

Hello, Meg! I'm looking forward to looking at your pictures!

Yes!  I would love to share pictures.  I'll be going there today. There's not much on it now since it's in between seasons but I may post a picture anyway.

Woah!! Amazing job!  Do you have to do this every winter--put your trees in there?  so much work!

You have a lovely space outside.
