Hello,
I just joined the forum. I am Alexandra from central Texas. I grow a lot of fruit trees in my garden and looking for figs as my more cold hardy barrier to protect my more cold sensitive plants.
This year I got to try my first fresh fig from my LSU purple tree and was hooked. Looking forward to learn more about all the great varieties there are and want to collect them all :P

Welcome!  Wait till you taste others that are 10 times sweeter than LSU Purple!  There are some varieties that you have to hold on to the fence when you eat them!  They are that good!

Welcome!

"looking for figs as my more cold hardy barrier to protect my more cold sensitive plants"

Figs will not protect your other trees and they drop their leaves during the winter. If you're looking for a wind barrier you might want to consider an evergreen one made of Italian Cypress as an example .

Welcome to the forum.

I know Figs loose the leaves in the winter. But since I am creating a food forest on my property I mix all the plants with each other. So they still provide kinda of protection.

Thanks for all the welcoming.
Where are all the Texas folks located?

I'm about an hour Northeast of Dallas near Bonham.  The cold weather is an issue somewhat here too.  Last year I didn't protect my fig trees and most of them got killed back to ground level. So from now on I'm going to wrap a chicken wire/netting cage around and fill them with leaves to about chest high.

I hope you find a good way to protect yours that we can all learn from :)

Oh well that seems to be a bit different. I have my brown Turkey Fig tree now for like 3 years and never protected it. It haven`t died back, just went dormant. But for some reason is not doing so well. I assume to much water, cause I planted strawberries around it and watered each day.
Well I will see how it looks next year.
I just mulch my trees just real heavily with dead wood, woodchips and yard clippings. Works great.
How cold does it get normally in Bonham?

It got down to 12 degrees at the worst here this year and I think the average coldest is about 20 degrees for a day or two at a time.

I'm in the space between 2 tiny towns most people have never heard of, about halfway between Austin and Ft Hood. Our coldest temp so far was a drop to 18F for a night last winter.

Normally it doesn't get below about 25, but hey. Texas weather. You could be in shorts and flip flops for new years day, then bundled up in sweaters for Easter. I think we get about 4 weeks of winter, but they only show up a few days at a time. Winter exercise if hauling your post of tender perennials in and out of the house 2 or 4 times a week as the weather keeps changing.

Hi texas_girl,
Welcome to the forum!
Start thinking on the bushes you have that can get out... so that you have more space for more fig trees.
The "problem" with fig trees is that you buy one tree and have 10 from that same strain 5 years later. All you need is more land to plant them in :)
You need at least two more fig trees (from different strains) : one with dark fruits and one with light colored fruits :)
And try not to hit the 50 head count too soon ... That is the challenge ...
Did you already try to root cuttings ?

I have 1.5 Acre that should be enough. When not we need to buy the neighbor house lol.
I already started to get ride of some of the bushes. It is always a argument with my Hubby, cause he don`t like that when I do that. But I can use the native bushes until my plants are big enough and then they need to go.
Yes I tried it once before. Made a cut from my brown Turkey tree. I just sticked it in the dirt. I think it rooted before I forgot to water it. That was like last year ago, since then my thumb turned much greener.

Lol...my husband asked me the other night "so, how many cuttings DO you have--100?"  I didn't answer.  Secretly, here on this forum where no one can actually see my garage fridge, yes, I have about 60 now thanks to so many kind people here. heheheheheheheh....more cuttings!

Edit:  Okay, that sounded weird.  I am not really that weird, I just love figs.

I would love to be able to sneak stuff in, but we both work from home. So Hubby always asked me, what I got there again. And that I had promised not to buy anymore plants this year. I just can`t help myself, when I see something I like I really really need to have it.

Haha.
mine will get a nice surprise then on Friday.
My argument is, I want to grow everything so it can go in the Ground next spring and the yard looks even more beautiful. So everything have a long growing season.

Hey Texas Girl, how cold does it get in your town?  LSU Purple and Brown Turkey will grow great.  If you can, get yourself a Adriatic JH fig tree.  Just search for that name here and read what others have said about it.  There's a guy in Texas that has the mother tree.  The figs are green when ripe with a dark ruby red sweet center!  You will fall in love with that fig.

The average is 39F but since we are in a heavily wooded area it stays warmer, not sure how much. But should be warm enough for any fig trees.
