i just bought 8 cuttings and need help with my tree that's already 5 ft tall.. is that too much to ask? and i am not bogus and i resent the fact that you even said that.. i happen to love figs and will have approx 18 tree's when i'm done this year ready to go in the ground for next year..
it's apparent that you've forgotten what the name of this forum is:  figs 4 fun.. and i've got some real news for you.. your not fun or funny!! i'll get my help from someone else who's here to help those that are newbie's  like me.. and yes, i am a newbie so what!! i'm also 65 years old and a vietnam vet are you?

geeeze gorgi,   In the case you're wrong, why risk being hurtful.

I'm happy I just learned the ctrl + manuever.

@ THEVICKSTER ,  Gorgi does not speak for me nor others.   I hope you continue to enjoy your figs, they are fun.

thank you sonisoni  I appreciate that.. it's really quite involved from everything i've been reading to grow roots from cuttings. i'm getting like 8 or 9 or them in real soon and i just got back from home depot where i picked up almost everything i needed.. nobody in my area has the fertilome potting mix so i had to buy some sta green potting mix with fertilizer.. i don't know if that will work or not because it has the fertilizer with it??? i am a newbie, that's for sure.. that's one of the reasons i joined f4f because i'm trying my best to learn and do the right thing..  for the most part, i am having fun on here and i love your sign in!! here is a link to what i bought.. please tell me what you think.. i don't want to lose all my new cuttings that are coming in..

thanks again..

Vic,

Good luck.  Sounds like you are diving in with passion and a a big challenge ahead of you.  I  had many friends who served in Vietnam.  Some came back, some didn't and some came back so broken they are still fighting to keep their heads above water. I have a daughter who is currently in Med Corps and serving in Korea. If there is anything nice about war now as compared to then it is that the survival rate for battlefield injuries has risen from the 59% it was then to about 90% now.

some of the fine men i served with never came back!  we only were bombed twice but that was enough for me... and yes, the v.a. says i do have ptsd but i'm not pursuing anything from having it.. they can keep their money.  had i of known that i wouldn't be able to sleep more than 2 hours at a time at night, i still would have served because that's just who i am.. i will pray for those still fighting for our causes.. they need and deserve that because that's the least we can do for them.
thanks for your input .

VIC.

I might be wrong, but other than being illegal to import without proper license, Turkish figs might need fig wasp which very limited area of US has.

On 10/29/13 I received a visit from the USDA inspector (He called and made an apptm't, was a very nice guy, doing his job) who confiscated 8 nicely rooted figs from Turkey that I bought as cuttings (on EBay) in the spring and gave them all my love through the summer.... Looked beautiful. My advice is follow the regs or loose your plants (and $$, $65.00) and hard work. The seller takes your money, EBay takes your money, so their happy, the USDA takes your plants and gets his money on payday, and you take the loss. That's how it works folks, they got MY attention, won't do that again.

UPDATE:  Started my fig adventure in a plastic clear shoebox from the home depot and put moss and cuttings layered inside it.. believe it or not after only 4 days i can see shoots coming out of the cuttings.. YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I've already planted 16 clear plastic drinking glasses with about 7 or 8 different varieties.. love doing this..
this stuff is so satisfying i can't believe it.. makes you just want to eat figs all the time doesn't and feel good all over.. ha.. lol... will have to wait to see how my plastic cup plantings work out.. used ferti-lome supreme potting mix.. might be ultimate potting mix ?? but it's the best thing i've ever seen for using to plant stuff.. so plyable and easy to stuff down the cups.. i'm going to start by filling them up with regular water the first time and then using 99.9 pure reverse osmosis water for watering the second time.. and keep switching back and forth... that should keep me ahead of the game so they won't get rot..
also I was reading about this one member who had a plant from turkey and they came and tore up his whole place.. MY FRIENDS I THINK THAT WE HAVE A USDA PLANT INSPECTOR AMONG US HERE SO I WOULD BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT I WRITE IN THE FUTURE ON HERE ABOUT PLANTS WE GET FROM OTHER PLACES.. (IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN)... mine of course are all from here.. some are my neighbors and then some are from other peoples neighbors in two towns over.. found the most incredible fig tree that is italian decent in the town of hurst and the guy gave me all the cuttings I wanted... if anyone would like cuttings for free off of that bush, i'm sure it could be arranged with him...he says all the neighbors come and get all the figs off his tree when then come ripe and get this.. (HE DOESN'T LIKE FIGS)..... but since the house was his parents he just didn't have the heart to cut it down.. i'll have to take some pictures and put them on here for all of you...updated completed...

First I got mold in my ziplock and then to salvage my cuttings before they were too far gone, I rinsed them in a mild clorox solution and planted them in a potting mix which retained too much water.  When I first saw the wilting leaves (some did bud out before I killed them), I thought my cuttings needed more water not realizing that figlets will wilt if they get too much water as well as when they are too dry.

I just managed to root 2 of 4 cuttings I started in early September using the perlite/spaghum moss mixture recommended by the forum.  The dice are still out on the other 2 cuttings but they are a slow growing variety and perhaps just need more time. I will know probably in another month whether one or both of them have taken. One looks promising and the other I have some doubts about. Think rooting cuttings is a bit like making a good pie crust.  Once you identify the right feel for the dough (growing media) you can replicate the process easily but knowing what is too much and what is not enough is hard to identify just from a written description. Nothing breeds success better than success itself.

I bit the bullet and bought one too this afternoon. When I went to look up the listing for you, I found it had already shipped. Hoping to have much better luck this time.  If its not an intrusion, I am curious as to what has attracted you to this cultivar in particular. We have Turks in the family which is how I became interested in some of the Turkish fig varieties.
Just saw your message.. sorry.. the reason i became interested in them is because i've heard they are quite large and extremely sweet and you know me.. the sweeter the better Marianna.... I'd love to get my hands on one or two of those cuttings from the old country that are clean and without disease and get cuttings sent to me from those.. probably won't happen though... there is no way I would buy one from Turkey on ebay because they will stop it at the border and dispose of it.... also after reading all that i have read.. listen to me clearly on this:
MY FRIENDS I THINK THAT WE HAVE A USDA PLANT INSPECTOR AMONG US HERE SO I WOULD BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT I WRITE IN THE FUTURE ON HERE ABOUT PLANTS WE GET FROM OTHER PLACES.. (IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN..  I wouldn't buy from overseas and i've been told to mix 1/2 dishwashing liquid with 1/4 bleach and 1/4 water and wash the branches all really good and inspect every inch of them before wrapping them for storage in the frigerator and that's how i do it.. good thing i did because I didn't like too much how 4 cuttings looked to me when I got them from a neighbors house so i scrubbed them really good and now they look pristene!!! you guys on here are so informed and smart.. love hanging with all of you and getting my dailey fill of knowledge about fig stuff.... love it love it love it..

Mock Strawberry Jam

6 c. mashed fresh figs
3 c. sugar
2 pkg. strawberry gelatin
Cut stems from figs; wash thoroughly and drain. Crush to pulp using potato masher. Place all ingredients in large pot, cook over medium heat until mixture starts to bubble. Reduce heat and continue cooking for 45 minutes, stirring often. Yield: 4-5 pints.

I just made some 2 weeks ago and added a cup of strawberries. I made mine chunky. Made another batch last week and used brown sugar and honey instead of white sugar, results were good.

FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
