I've run into very few large green figs down in Louisiana. This one was found by my friend on a visit to a cousin's house. He says they aren't full size yet and they ripen green. The ribbing on them is heavy. The one in the picture looks like it could be a breba. He tells me the tree is loaded with fruit. I'll be thankful for any suggestions until I can get my hand on the ripe fruit. Cuttings are heading my way although late in the cuttings season. Anyone have any ideas on starting them from already budding branches. Thanks for any replies and suggestions.

I'm not betting my money ( not all the money ) on a dead horse but I'm willing to say this is a Flanders fig.

In the past I have rooted cuttings in mid summer. You have all to gain and nothing to lose. I'm sure you can get more if it doesn't work out.

Rafed, thanks for the guess. I checked out the pictures of Flanders and sure enough some of them looked pretty close to the shape and ribbing. I just didn't think a Flanders was that big. Can't wait for mine to start bearing.

Gene, If it is a breba fig, they are generally much larger than main crop figs. Flanders is also has a good sized main crop.

Thanks for the added info Jon. When talking to my friend I asked him if it was on old wood or newer green wood. He is not familiar with figs but he said it looked like it might be on the older wood. He also said it was quite a large tree, perhaps 12 foot tall and 15 foot across. He took some cuttings off of it and is sending them to me. I hope I can get those started but since they are already broke dormancy I don't know what kind of challenge that will be. Weather I do or not, I received a rooted cutting from our friend Rafed in the mail yesterday. Either way I should have a growing tree soon.

Jon by the way, when does your figs start to ripen in CA. I'll be there at the end of June, is there any chance that some will be ripening at that time. I'd sure like to see many different ones in all there glory.

Gene, you need to reprogram for the end of August.

Jon I wish I could but it a family vacation that's been planned and paid for already. We'll be spending the week at a place on Mission Bay. From there we plan to make excursions in all directions. My plans are to hopefully meet up with you and Sue . I've spoken to Richard Watts and he's invited me up and as I'll be spending some time in LA anyway, it won't be out of the way. I just know my week will be way too short. We'll be there on June 19 thru June 26.
