Help identify this tree please

Hey fig lovers
I had 2 trees that I moved to the new house 2 months ago.  One looks like it may not survive, just no leaves at all, now and the other is thriving.  Problem is I dont know which is which.  One is a black mission and other is a kadota.  I am attaching a pic, can you tell which one this is so I can replace the other one.  The fruit seems a bit purple and green.  I think it is the black mission....but does that fruit start green and turn purple or vice versa.  If it was a kadota, would the fruit start purple / green and turn green ?  I think not but I am no expert.  Thanks in advance

All figs start green. Some stay green, turn grey, yellow, brown, red or purple when ripe. Your Mission will have figs that start green and turn purple.

Kadota is green to yellow when ripe

The buds on the Black Mission should be reddish.

Hi everyone, I found my old thread here, it looks like I planted a black mission and a janice seedless kadota.  based on the responses, I assume this is the black mission, am I correct ??    Thanks alot...

That would be Black Mission, given the choices.

Okay, I have the same identification issue here.

Bought and planted this fig tree maybe 10 years ago and for the life of me can’t remember what type.  Until you guys got me hooked on the finer points of fig appreciation, I never much cared.  Fruit is about a good walnut size, almost black, with a very sweet soft pink colored center.   No fruit now to show!

On a previous thread Gr8Figs states the reddish bud might be the telltale sign.  Hummm….?

Given the photos below of just emerging leaves and bud, you think this is a “Black Mission”?    I had always thought it might be a “Brown Turkey”, as they are a common tree around here too.   Thanks to all the fig experts for your qualified opinion.

Hi Jack,
Given the choice of Kadota or Black Mission,I thought that the reddish buds on a Black Mission might be the easiest way to tell the difference between the two fig trees. See my photo below.

The leaves in your photo resemble Violette de Bordeaux,Negronne,or Petite Aubique IMHO.

Thanks Barry,

I don't ever remembering names of cultivars you mention.  Or, seeing at any local nursery’s, where I picked this up.

Here's another photo, it is of the first cutting taken from tree in question.  I notice there is no sign of pink as on your example.    Hummm......maybe it is not possible to ID from juvenile or new growth?  Could it be I will have to wait for mature leaves as well as ripe fruit to get my answer?   Much appreciate any further ideas.

Hedarud you will surely know when it fruits this season.

Hedarud,  Local nurseries purchase from wholesalers, and often the tags get mixed up.  Most nurseries are not fig experts, so they would not detect differences by leaf or color or anything!  They believe the tag!

I purchased an Italian Honey, and it turned out to be a dark fig which members here ID'd as VDB.  I was happy with the mix-up!  Show us pictures when you get figs!!

Good luck!

Suzi
