Help identifying fig tree

I purchased this property in Altadena CA about 2 years ago, and I inherited two fig trees with it.

One I'm pretty sure is a black mission, but no idea on the other one. I know they are tough to identify but I would appreciate any guesses.

The tree was half dead when we purchased the house and had zero figs on it.  I cut it back hard and it is coming back nicely. Last year it had a handful of figs on it. They are a green fig that were on the small side but very good, almost honey taste.

This year the breba crop is coming in super strong.

Tough to say at this point, you need to give us more information. What color is the flesh of the ripened fruit? When the fig ripens, does the ostiole(eye) stay a light color or does it darken to pink or red.  Is there a void or cavity in the middle of the ripe fig or is it nearly solid or filled with syrup.  Does the eye stay closed when ripe or is it open, and does it drip syrup from the eye when good and ripe. All things that will help get you a real ID. Of course, when the figs ripen giving us pictures of the whole fig, the eye of the fig, and picture of it cut open top to bottom is the most helpful. Oh, and use a quarter in the picture for size reference as well.

With all that being said, at this moment I would guess something like Verte or Green Ishia. But that is just a guess based off of the leaves and ripe fruit pictures could change that in a second.

Oh, and welcome to the forum. :) There is ton's for you to learn here and at the Ourfigs forum as well. Soon you probably have a yard full of fig trees.

Thank you .... I'll wait till some ripen a bit then post more pics.

"Soon you probably have a yard full of fig trees."

Ha Ha that has already begun.

Diana Fig, I only had a few figs on it last year, but its starting to load up this year.

Turquesa Fig, I had this one in a 24in box last year.  The fruit would get huge and burst open. The few that ripened correctly were fantastic.  I hope I have better luck with it in the ground this year.

Here are Texas Ever Bearing, Yellow long neck, Green Ishia, and two mystery ones I found about 6in tall in my yard last fall.

Welcome to the forum ! There is one more person from Altadena here and Glandale and Pasadena too.

Welcome to the forum!!!  And, you're practically neighbors to Greenfig & Altadenamar!  I'm in so cal also but in Orange County near Disneyland.  Either way, you're very close!  Love the idea of a farm...especially when there are fig trees!  Oh, I just read Greenfig's comment...yes, there are a few of us fig lovers out here :-D  I'll look forward to reading more about your farm and on identification of your fig trees.

Welcome!  Have you needed to protect your figs from critters?

We got pretty lucky when we bought this place, the previous owner put in a lot of fruit trees.  Anna apple, red baron peach, Persimmon, Pomegranate, very large mature grapefruit, Kumquat, mature black berry, Lemon, orange, tangerine. Probably more that i'm forgetting.

The previous owner did a lot of Hydroponic gardening so I have been working on taking up a lot of the grass, building raised beds, bringing in manure, mulching, building compost bins and we have 3 worm bins in the basement, etc.

The property even came with a green house, that is a pretty interesting design.  It is all dug out and he has concrete blocks lined up to get airflow to try and keep it cool in the summer.  I have used it to start seeds in the winter. but it still gets too hot in the summer.  We are not sure if we are going to keep it or not.

I found a guy in the valley who sells 24in boxes for 14.00 so I have a lot of trees in boxes till we decide where to put them. 5 Australian finger limes, 2 Yuzu lemons, 4in one apple and two Avocados.

We joined the CRFG and played with grafting, we had pretty good success for our first attempt.

I look forward to meeting some of the local fig enthusiasts mentioned to exchange ideas cuttings etc.

Here are some pics of the green house.

Not yet....

I have hardware cloth on the bottom of all my raised beds.  I had to put fences around the raised beds when I put seedlings out they have gotten pulled out. but once the plants mature I have not had any issues.
Mainly skunks and raccoons come through at night.

I see signs of gophers but I have not tried to get rid of them yet.

I need to do something about the birds though.  They go after the dark figs, but don't seem to touch the ripe green ones.

You've got a nice place!
For me, the squirrels do about 90% of the damage during the day, the night shift is for rats, possums and raccoons.
Birds are bad but easy to protect from. I have not found a way to protect against the fury guys, they are too smart and resourceful .
Have you got any bears? They are fairly common in the hills.

We were renting a place a couple of blocks from Farnsworth park while we were renovating.  One night  two sheriff cars were escorting a bear down the street.  The person that I get goat manure from lives closer to the hills and has bears on the property every so often.  I see a lot of coyotes and recently saw a bobcat.

So, is there a water line going into the bricks also? Actually sort of ingenious if so. You have a bit of a moisture to the the bricks which have a high surface area with air channels and if you have a fan to pull air through the moist brick, then you've got a combination evaporative cooler/geothermal cooler. If you can suspend some screen/shade cloth over the green house you may be alright in the hotter times of year.

The water line is there to get water into the green house.  It is not set up to mist or spray the block.  But that may be worth trying in the future as it would be easy to set up.

There are fans mounted in the top of the green house to pull air through, but the electric was pretty sketchy so I cut it all going to the green house. I will need to run new electric to it at some point in the future.

I set up a little misting system on one side to water vegetable starts.  We use a soil blocker for seed starts.

Wow, fun stuff!

I thought I would bump this back up with the hope of identifying this tree. Here is one of the Breba figs. Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

What a lovely property altafarm. And how cool that a gardener is stepping in to take care of another gardener's plants and greenhouse. Best of luck to you. The established members here have been an amazing source of wisdom and generosity to this newbie! Best Jodi

I'm more than a little bit envious of your greenhouse.
