help picking figs...

Hello. THis is my first post here. i'm planning to get a fig soon, and my local nursery carries three types of figs (i think): mission, italian honey, and BT. I refuse to grow a BT. I have tasted them before :(. also, my figs MUST be container grown. I would prefer to grow a black mission, i like dark figs better, but i heard that they get massive fast and can't stand cold (i live in 6b). is it reasonable to grow a Mission in a container? if not, is the italian a good choice? how does it taste?

Thanks much

Welcome!

You'd be way better off with a Violette de Bordeaux or a more rare fig that you can get here.  Email Pitangadiego and see what he has for sale.

Ditto what Bob said. Welcome to the forum, we're glad to have you.

Plantlover yes mission can be a fast grower.
The one we had was from monrovia and it grew very fast and it can be managed in container just more often such as when it comes time to root prune.
It produced lots of figs in its 2nd season we had it here and was bought at least a full season old.
Discarded because it just wasn't the right mission as im sure there are better tasting ones.

I'd second the Violette de Bordeaux recommendation. It's a pretty plant that is a relatively slow grower, is often recommended for a container, bears well (here anyway), and is becoming more widely available. If you don't want to mail order, ask you local nursery if they can order one for you.

why no love for BT? Poor fig gets no love.

Man, I was hoping you were needing help picking ripe figs...

Anyways...welcome!  :)

Welcome!  I would not give up on Brown Turkeys.  You had a had strain.  Some are very bland and some are excellent!  They are extremely hardy!  Hardy Chicago is an excellent fig and so is Celeste and Improved Celeste.

I echo what Martin said too.  There are several varieties of Black Mission.  Jon sells one called Black Mission NL that is excellent also.  My buddy Bass sent me a tree called Willow Street.    The figs are larger than most Black Mission and the flavor is excellent.  I think its a Black MIssion type.  Marseilles Black VS is also another good one to get.  There are so many to choose from.

The sweetest fig I've ever tasted is White Triana.  It's almost too sweet to me.  But I love it!

Yea, but i would prefer to start with a store bought fig tree before doing any mail order, especially from california. as for why i hate BT, well, a neighbor has one. I tasted it. it wasn't till i tasted another variety (unsure of name) that i was even able to look at figs again. now i crave them.

I'll see about asking the nursery to get one for me.
So, if i was to go for a Mission, and couldn't get the VdB, how would i go about keeping it in a pot? what would i need to do?

Welcome Plantlover .

LOL Frank!

People who live in the SE USA like brown turkey better than most people who live in cooler zones.  If you have an Orchard Supply Hardware near you they sell Violette de Bordeaux.  That's where I got mine.

I would have to say stay away from celeste. I have had one for four years. It produced lotsa figs but every one dropes before they get ripe here in 6b. Living in 6b I would say stick with these. VdB, RdB,MvsB,hardy chicago, petes honey, nordland.
