Helpful way to know when to water

Hi all,

Thanks to all the info on this forum I have had very good success in rooting my cuttings and going to the u-line bags . Then I still have great success with about 90% survival rate to this point.
My difficulty started once they went from bags to 3/4 gallon pots with 50/50 pearlite ,  promix hp . At this point I would have those situations where everything was fine for days or weeks then leaves would fall off and the plant would go downhill from there .
My problem was overwatering due to the fact I could not tell how wet the root zone was. Even though the pot felt light and the top 2 inches of soil was powder dry, there was still lots of moisture in the root zone .
What I now do is put a shishkabob stick in each pot and leave it there .The moisture on the stick and the amount of dirt that sticks to it are a great indicator of moisture level in the pot.

I hope this helps ...... John

I will have to try that.

 Thanks..  another weapon to try.

When the soil is noticibly wet and the pot feels heavy ,the stick will come out clean and wet.
I use this dirt sticking to stick technique when the soil looks dry and pot is light .
I also touch the stick to the back of my hand to get an idea of the wetness of the stick.
It takes a bit of practice but as Fredfig said , this is another weapon in the arsenal.

Oooh, I have lots of those and need to give this a shot.

I use the when they look a little wilted they need water. This way is idiot proof like when you bake a cake I like it. Thank you very creative.
