Helping choosing a fig tree

My neighbor will give a fig tree for free but I have to chose one of fig trees from her. Please help choosing one of them:

Brunswick,LSU Gold,Paradisos,Hunt

Where do you live,.... What is your climate zone,.... In-ground, or, containerized,.... How will you overwinter the tree?

We need some clues so we can answer your questions.

How large/old are the trees...are they at bearing age?

Frank

All trees are at bearing age about 2 years and in pot but their mother trees are all in ground. I'm in Southern Maryland.

What climate zone, in Southern Maryland?

Will you plant trees in-ground, or, will you continue to grow them in pots?

How will you overwinter your tree(s)?

We need some clues so we can answer your questions.

Frank

don't know about the others. however, Paradiso depends on which one, can be very late variety. last year, my Paradio ripen on Nov. this year it'll be much early, mid Aug, but i can't explain what happened. now it has second flush of figs which i would expect to see them in mid to late Oct., along with two breba it is putting on.

now.. Paradiso I have is Paradiso Gene. last year with chill and rain in Nov., it ripen fine for me and it was very sweet and refreshing. it has somewhat like watermelon/cantalope taste. i love this one.

Hunt may be a good choice.  Look under the varieties on the Figs4Fun page.
It has a good flavor, sheds rain well and has been around awhile.  It is not listed as a big producer.  Brunswick in my area 7a gets killed to the ground
very often in winter and Paridiso is not too well here either.  Don't know
about LSU Gold
If it were meI would take the Hunt.

Frank ,

Putting it in garage in winter. Containerized. Climate zone is 6B. Yes. trees are bearing some fruit for now but not sure trees' exact ages. Just know all are 5 ft high.

Thank Pete and C.H. for good suggestions:)

Now, you'll begin to get your answers.

By the way, what fig variety performs best for the neighbor lady who is giving you the fig tree?  Maybe she will tell you her opinions about the figs she grows.  It might help you make an easier choice.

Frank

LikeLike like Pete said depends on what paridiso they have but right now saying hunt. The Brinswick is great if it's dry It is very sweet and cold hardy but if any rain hits it you can have fig vinigar. LSU gold has a mild flavor to begin with if it gets hit with water you won't have anything. I say go with hunt

Why don't you wait and taste the figs before you buy a tree? I'm sure she would let you sample the fruit to compare diffence of types. If all are in the ground, I'd guess they are hardy for area. Ask when each type regularly ripens and if any has two crops, also if each crop is edible. Meaning taste ok. I woundn't be a pain in the ass, if not sure about questions, write them down before you speak with her.

Frank, this old lady wanted me to play and choose the best one. She would not tell me which is better.

The_Celt, I will keep an eye on hunt.

Luke, Good idea to taste figs first.

Thanks!

I brought a LSU Gold at home. BIG SMILES.

LSU Gold's leaves look not so beautiful but it has more than 45 figs with it thus I choosed it. Hunt is with no any figs.

I can have TWO 6 ft LSU Gold trees if I make a cuttings on it :)
