Reminds of a time I told the children not to pick the tomatoes. Dutifully, they did not pick, but took  bites of several still on the vine.

Time to protect with organza bags. 

The organza bags do a great job! Not so for ants though.

@ Art I don't think its the same as Longue D'aout.

In my neighborhood the organza bags were useful for about one week. The squirrels figured out right away and now specifically are looking for them.
What I do now is to use the plastic cups inside the larger size of the bags (or halves of the small water battles).
Otherwise the criters chew right through them.
Also, a spray of a Tabasco sauce over the bags helps a little too, I use 1 tbsp for a half gallon.

I'm waiting for my Nordland to ripen. The leaves and the unripe figs sure look like my Longue d'Aout at this point but I have heard from other sources that they are distinct varieties as well.

I wish I had saved my expensive organza bag that got completely bitten through along with the fig.  Not a fan of the organza bags.  YOU can have em!  I find the plastic snap berry containers much more efficient.

I think you might be right, the leaves look similar but the fig looked like a banana growing, It just didn't look like a Longue D'Aout.

@ Suzi I agree with you for critters but I use the bags for the birds,nothing is full proof except a cage and I have too many for that.

First of all relax -always think about percentage- how much percentage do i share with the birds etc...

i think above 50% is criminal and these animals should be brought to court - shot gun maybe? :)
