Hey!!! I'm new here!!!

Hello I was recommended to this page by suzi of garden web. New here would appreciate help navigating this site. Looking forward to this. : )

Welcome Smungung!  Nice to see you here!

I'm sure people will welcome you and give you ideas for the best varieties in your planting zone.

Go to the control panel at the top right, and put your planting zone in the signature field.  Zone 6, right?

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome!

Thanks I can tell this forum is going to be nice to be on. Very friendly people. : )

What variety would be best for my zone? I would like to plant it into the ground for my sister she loves the fruit.

MBVS, RDB, Sal's EL, Florea, Malta Black, LaRadek's EBT, and Hardy Chicago are some examples that are supposed to be cold hardier.  In zone 6, you will most likely have to protect the trees in some fashion especially with the past couple winters.

Currently, I've resigned to growing in containers and storing them in the garage over the winter.  At some point, I'll probably try a couple clones in ground.

Here's a link to a post with a cold hardy fig list that is a good start:

Here is a link to a flavor group discussion as well.  Growing/tasting at least one of each flavor group could help you narrow down your future choices:

Don what types of figs do you grow?

Welcome to the Forum!

Welcome to the forum...............

Thanks guys

What fig trees produce the most and would be good for my zone?

Smungung, Don gave you a good list, but newbies aren't good with abbreviations

MBVS = Marseilles Vs. Black
RDB = Rhonde De Bordeaux
Sal's EL,
Florea,
Malta Black
LaRadek's EBT = LaRadek's Everbearing Texas ?  Not familiar with that one
Hardy Chicago
I'll be sending you cuttings of Violette De Bordeaux per our GW conversation this winter.

Search the forum for ways to start cuttings.

Have fun and good luck!

Thanks Suzi how much postage would it cost?

I've sent many in previous years.  I guess it depends how far you are from California.  Little sticks don't weigh much.  Don't forget to remind me.  I have 2 VDB trees in ground and they have many pruneable branches.

As you learn about figs you will find that some varieties have only one crop and others have two.  The early crop is called a Breba crop.  The main crop comes next and that is the biggest crop.  Those with one crop include Desert King and Norman's Yellow.  VDB has two crops.

I'm basically on the other side of the country in New Jersey.

Welcome to the forum...

Welcome, Smungung!

I would like to mention that some of those varieties mentioned by Don are so similar that I would consider them the same, i.e.:

Sal's EL = Hardy Chicago =(almost) MBVS => all Mt Etna type figs

I think you do not need all of them, just get one, provide good growing conditions and eat figs every year! :)

Welcome

I've provided a link to our forum leader's website.  Here you can look up the varieties recommended for you.  Forward the link to your sister just to make her drool!

WARNING:  Once you catch "Fig Fever,"  there is NO cure! ;-))

Thanks so much guys!!!!
Going to have lots of fun here

Wait I need help I can't can't reply to messages. I've sent several replies and when I look in the sent messages it says zero. I don't know what to do.

Welcome to the forum Smungung.  In case your interested Bills Figs in Flemington,N.J. will be having a  seminar on "Fall Pruning and Care of Fig Trees" on Sept.24th at 6PM and again on Saturday Oct.17th.  Bill knows Jersey Fig growing inside and out.  He is also having his 7th Fig Fest on Sept. 12th.

Hi Smungung,
Welcome !
You have a "save message" box - if you don't cross that, the message is sent without keeping a copy in the sent box.
So your message was more than likely sent.
In Zone6, you should consider pot culture. I'm in Zone7 and already have the winter take its toll every year on my fig trees.
Pot (5 gallons/20 liters of size) culture is easy, you "just" need to master the watering and feeding/fertilizing program - and you need a garage to keep the pots protected a bit more.
Good luck and be patient with your fig trees !
