Hi from Austin

Figured I'd say hi to the forum. Sort of got the fig itch a while back and have been lurking here for quite a while now.

Just got a house this past summer with about an acre of land, so really wanting to start growing more.

Currently have a brown turkey which will be planted in the ground this coming spring, and growing several panache and martinenca rimada in pots. Not entirely sure how well they will do through the winters here so a bit reluctant to try them in the ground. Pretty mild but still would rather not lose any trees during the 1 or 2 hard freezes we have per year. I did see there's a few other hill country members here, so maybe they can comment.

Anyway, glad to be here. Forum has already been a great resource for me.

Jamie

Welcome aboard Jamie. Good for you.
One acre should be enough for now :)

Enjoy Austin!

Welcome to the forum Jamie...

Welcome, Jamie!  Lots of good info here.

Welcome Jamie. Austin Texas I assume.

Welcome!  For the hard freezes you can hang Christmas lights in your trees, cover them with a blanket and put a tarp or plastic sheet over it all.  Be sure the lights are in the middle of the tree, not touching the blanket before you turn them on.

Forgot there's 7 or 8 Austin's in the US, but yes Austin TX.

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

On a side topic, if anyone ever needs help with aquariums, let me know. Have been keeping all types of tanks including high tech planted and reef tanks for more than 20 years now.

I guess 1 addicting expensive hobby just wasn't enough for me... This one tastes better than aquariums though.

Welcome! Definitely lots of good info here & experience here :)

How about fish nuggets from those expensive tropical fish?

Welcome to the forum. My panache have done great in AZ. We don't get too many freezes, but I can tell you that your trees will love the heat in the summer.

I also run aquariums. 1 reef, 1 cichlid, 1 community, and 1 Tilapia pond in the backyard for Aquaponics.

This has been a great forum. I have learned a ton.

Welcome!

The Austin area is a great place to grow figs.  The figs I put into the ground in September just recently lost their leaves, like days ago.

So I wrapped them in pipe wrap thingys.  None were over 3/4" diameter so I was worried, just in case, but unless they are really young or it is one of those rare years where it goes teens or god forbid, single digits, I wouldn't wrap them, other than deep mulch of course.

Hopefully we will get that wet spring I hear talk of and your trees will take off. :)

Welcome Jamie. One acre will not be enough if you develop a fig fever.

The biggest threat to your young trees is mice and rabbits. If your yard is not fenced then Deer and Hog etc...
I protect the lower portion of the trunk with some type of mice proof screen, even in pots.

Last winter my Black Madeira died to the soil and came back. I lost two thirds of the height of my first year Col de dame trees but they also came back nicely and for first year trees they did great. I had over 30 figs on my white CDD and several on the other two. They also were not protected. This year I wrapped them up with some plumbing cover. I want to see if I could allow the trunk to build some mass before stop covering them.

Welcome ! Sounds like we have some things in common. My husband and I have been into reef tanks for years as well. We use to grow rare corals and sale the frags but I've taken over the tanks . They are now used for figs ! Lol.

Hi-
I'm just east of Austin.
I have my young potted figs under heavy floating row cover with a strand of Christmas lights. So far, so good.

I would think that your freshwater aquarium water would be great for the garden or compost pile when cleaning the tanks. That's what I used to do when refreshing my ducks' kiddy pool.

If you have an acre to plant, maybe we can help with some other varieties later.
