I'm new to the forums and new to figs (growing, not eating-LOVE them) as well. I have a 6.5 acre farm in east central Ohio. I'm very interested in permaculture and working towards planting a food forest. I've browsed through several pages of postings. I'd love to find someone else in zone 6a who would like to chat about figs. Is eBay usually the best source for cuttings/plants? I have some of jimmychao's mystery white figs coming from eBay. I'm very excited to get into the world of figs, and from the looks of this forum, I found the right place.

Welcome.  I'm in Columbus Ohio.  So far Celeste (from Musillid) and one I got with a 'Pipo large white pear shape' from another member here have done best where I live.  But I'm yet to have a continuous year of fig growing in one state so far.  My wife's parents had given us a house in NJ as a wedding gift then they got divorced a few months after moved in and we had to get out.  It was a big disaster, and long story short we're back in Ohio for good.  

There's a nursery here in Columbus that sells brown turkey and kadota.  Other than that I've bought all my cuttings on eBay or from members on this forum, and of course I've received dozens of free cuttings from generous members on this forum.  Getting in on Jon's cuttings at the end of winter and UCDavis is also a really good way to get started.

If you're ever in the Columbus area hit me up and I'll give you a tree.  Or come fall season when they've all gone dormant get in touch with me and I'll send you some free cuttings of Musillid's Celeste and Vito's Pipo.

I work in Columbus near Polaris. I'm there 3-5 days per week (until I can figure out how to make this farm pay for itself and escape the rat race). Which nursery are you referring to? I saw a brown turkey at a nursery in Newark. It looked really nice, but it was $40. I was very tempted.

It's way out in the country off State Street past the limits of Westerville.  I've still got my brown turkey in the pot with their logo on it I'll let you know.  They were priced $34.99 the only reason we went there was because my wife had found a groupon for $30  off.  I tried various grafts on it through the winter and early spring and nothing took but the thing just refused to die despite my butchered attempts.  It started growing a new shoot in March once we got settled back down in Ohio and that shoot is now over 4 feet tall.  It's an unruly plant.  

I live about 10 minutes from Polaris.  Swing by and pick up a tree!

Hello from Central Ohio.  I joined the board a couple months back and have really enjoyed it.  I have 3  3-4' trees growing in bottom water pots plus a couple short ones.  I, too, just got some of Jimmy's cuttings and plan to keep a couple and gift some for Christmas.  As my signature line states "I'm looking forward to my first EVER vine ripened fig"

Jeff this is a great place to gain information and to build inventory.  Don't be afraid to buy cuttings off ebay.  I have bought several and have been pleased with the results so far.  Also lot's of info here about rooting cuttings just jump in with both feet.   I think you will enjoy.

Welcome to the forum community...
There is lots of information for our zone and several members are growing and trialing "cold hardy figs" in ground (Herman2 and robertharper) you can search for their recommendations. Keep in mind that cold hardy is a relative term, fig plants will still need to be protected in winter, at least in their early years. I'm also into permaculture gardening and have been collecting and planting perennial edible plants including blueberry, service berry, Russian apple and edible honeysuckle to name a few.

Welcome Jeff! If you are down my way in Cincinnati, there is a nursery by the name of Natorp's http://www.natorpnurseryoutlet.com/ . They have LSU Purple and Chicago Hardy in stock. The plants were about 36" tall and sourced from http://www.virginiaberryfarm.com/pages/view/2/ , pruned in a v shape for around $25.00. I purchased 2 CH and 1 LSU. I should have a fair amount of CH cuttings this fall. Send me a pm later this year and I would be happy to share with a fellow Buckeye!
