Hi there!

Hi! I'm Elizabeth and I live near Richmond, Virginia (7a). I just joined as a new member. I'm a dentist ,employed by the State and I also have a 10 acre chestnut farm. I don't have any business plans concerning figs ,as the other two jobs keep me busy. One of my fondest memories was picking and eating unripe figs off my grandparents' fig tree in Korea, as a four year old. Last spring, I saw You-Tube videos on figs and and got hooked. Thanks, Mr. Forever Figs! My goal is to learn and enjoy as much as I can about them. I have about 20 varieties, thanks to a generous fig forum member from Northern Virginia. I have a long way to go before I hit 600 varieties.

Welcome!  Harvey C grows chestnuts in Ca.  Don't fight with each other  :)

Why did you eat them before they were ripe?  What kinds do you have?

Welcome.

Forum member HarveyC also grows chestnuts.

Welcome Elizabeth . Seriously 600?

Welcome Figqueen

Are you aiming for 600?

Tell us about your chestnuts, too. Do you monoculture? What do you use for pollinators? How many trees do you fit on ten acres?

welcome to the forum. my wife's family also had fig trees in korea. you must be from south part of korea. up in seoul, i never seen a fig tree.

bob, i asked the same question to my mother in law.. she was eating figs that were not ripe.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the Forum Elizabeth...good luck with your fig collection.

Hi guys! I was picking unripe figs because I was four years old at the time and didn't know any better! I'm from Deague, much further south of Seoul, Korea. As I recall,(I'm 48 years old now) figs were very common ,as well as persimmon and pomegranate trees. The figs I ate had green skin with pink inside. Since figs trees were not native, they may have came with the missionaries. The chestnut trees are mostly chinese varieties and they do pollinate each other. I have  300 of them. My hope is 600 varieties of figs, but since my husband will have to move the pots to the garage every winter, it might not happen!

Elizabeth,

Thanks for the response. I am contemplating the same size chestnut planting - ten acres.

Six hundred fig pots is way a lot to move seasonally. In addition, you must have a small warehouse for a garage.!

600 is a good round number :) only have 50 varieties and i'm packed to the brim.. but still want more. fig collecting is a social disease in this forum.. very catchy.

edit: i guess i can call you noona. lol i'm only 46 this yr.

Hi Musillid. 10 acre orchard is just the right size for one or two person to manage. There is a chestnut forum on internet where you can get more info. But if you have any questions ,feel free to ask me.  Elizabeth.

Six hundred is a good starting figure.  Have your husband build a train to put the figs on and pull them in and out of the garage with.  People generally end up with 30 times as many fig trees as originally planned which will give you the 27th largest collection of the forum members.

What kind of figs do you have?

Welcome, Elizabeth!

How long have you been growing chestnuts?  I started in 1999 and have just over 5 acres and it keeps me pretty busy in the fall.  I have other crops also and have a lot of potted figs, about 100 varieties, with plans for a 1 acre fig orchard to make things exciting.  In 2008 I wrote that I doubted I would have a couple dozen figs.  Watch out, they can be addicting, a disease like Pete talks about.

Hi Pete! It's wonderful that you're wife is korean. My husband is caucasian. You can call me noona. It would be cooler if you're older than me, and I can call you Oppa (Gang-nam style) :).

Welcome Elizabeth.

Hi Harvey,  I first started with 100 chestnut seedlings back in 1998. Since then, I've been planting 50 trees every year. My last ones were planted this spring. This spring pollination time had been very rainy, so I'm bit worried. But these guys are very tough and they never cease to amaze me. It's good to meet a fellow chestnut grower on the fig forum! Good luck with your harvest. Elizabeth.

Hi Michael, good to hear from you! Thanks for showing me fig softwood propagation. Three weeks ago, (I think) a racoon, in an attempt  to reach my last  Lattarula breba crop,  broke the biggest branch. I have about 40 cuttings- half softwood, from it. They are all rooting at the moment and are still alive.
