Home Depot Figs..

Went to home depot this weekend to buy somthings for my wife and saw fig trees being dropped off for sale(50 dollars each) they had brown turkey and black madiera.  I started talking to the delivery guy and asked him about cutting and he went into the back of his truck and came out with these....3 brown turkey and 2 madiera cuttings that he said had fallen or broke off the trees when they were taking them out.  the pics below show the cuttings.  i have never tried/experimented with cuttings before so im keeping my fingers crossed as i dont have either of these yet.

are the cuttings a good size?  from what ive seen it looks like people are rooting cuttings that have older wood as these look fresh.  ive looked at a couple of videos and it looks like the cutting being used are larger/thicker.

Im going to try paper towel and a ziploc for now and check to see if it works, if not ill put it in phsagnum peat moss and try my luck there.

I would say you would have a pretty good chance with those.  I would probably soak them in water for a couple of hours and then try half in the bag and half in moist potting medium covered with a cup or a bag to keep the humidity up (plastic bins work if you have a bunch too).

I didnt pay him anything, ill take them out of the baggies i have them in and go get some promix.

I highly doubt if it is a Black Madeira fig introduced through Home Depot.
Although I saw beautiful Panachees  for $25 in Lowe's in Empire Center in Burbank and it also had wasps in the figs, go figure.
Frank.

Nice pickup. I too would be shocked if they werent Black Mission. I root summertime cuttings the way Bass does :

This is how I root as well, with just a couple of modifications.

First, I lightly score the bottom end of the cutting to remove just the bark in three or four strips of about an inch long each, to leave green cambium showing. This probably doesn't make much difference -- it's just a habit from how I was taught years ago.

The other difference is that I use 2-liter colorless soda bottles with their bottoms cut off instead of the plastic baggies. Most cuttings will fit in them just fine, and they are more durable than the bags.

You were all correct. . It was as black mission. Just left hd and they only had black mission.

How much are the HD plants?

Thanks coop
I'll have to pickup rooting materials and will try this tonight. I put the cuttings in the fridge. Till I can get them going. Is that ok?
